Albums higher pricing is likely good for other shapers. You don’t have to love MP but he has made quite a few shapes that are well loved-plasmic, Bom dia, Townsend, light bender. Can kooks ride albums, sure. They also ride CI lost Pyzek eyc

And bords should come/design with fins
Meh. I've have boards fins as part of the design and then swapped the fins out and it worked better.

I also swap fins depending on the waves. Even with bonzers where the fin system is an integral part of the design people are still moving around/swapping out the center fin.

Yeah, this is what really I don't get...other shapers who gripe about his prices.

Another line in the long list of why, historically, surfboard shapers are horrible at business.

No, like I’ve already said, if I wanted to spend $1500 on a board I’d buy 2 from Xanadu.

Everyone on this board talks about all the things wrong with surfing today. Crowds, adult learners, Surfline. Overpriced hipster doofus boards should be atop that list.
Strange how you hate on Album...they are super fun, u don't need to pay 1500, never paid more than 900 for plain PU-including asym and plas channelled. I see all the other name brands about the same price on the rack and personally get bored riding HPSB all the time when there are some fresh designs available to broaden horizons. Xanadus are great, he is very cool guy as well, glad u support him, but dissing MP not necessary (or cool)

I’ve heard a lot of shapers say that, they’re never gonna say it publicly or on some silly podcast.

An erBB favorite surfboard making man put it to me like this:

A bunch of guys who can’t shape worth a crap charge some of the highest prices in the business because image and Instagram. The alt boards are the easiest boards to shape and a lot of guys aren’t capable of expanding their skill beyond that. It kinda makes a mockery out of the craft as these guys aren’t anywhere near the skill level of guys who have shaped thousands of boards and put in the hard yards. The joke is on the consumer.

He was generalizing, but I don’t think in many cases he’s exactly wrong.
The irony is that the Album buyers are the same people complaining about low-skill Chinese boards.

My latest theory is that casa is actually an Album plant. He never lets this thread leave the front page. I probably would have moved on from Album but I find myself wanting to order more boards just to trigger him. I might even order some Album brand beard oil and I can't even grow a beard!

Maybe Album Matt really is a marketing genius...

You should try Draft. Same shapes at half the price!

Some of us are here because album ruined clay marzo’s surfing and we want revenge
I'd like to see Clay ride a HPSB now.

He kind of disappeared for a bit and I wonder if it's just that his surfing has dropped off in general, or it's the boards, or both.

I agree that he definitely isn't the old Clay in this most recent run of videos.

I've heard this theory before. Maybe true for some but complete bullshit for others. And yeah, I'm sure a bunch of shapers say this in whispered tones because they're scared of getting called out by inferior alt shapers :roflmao:

Shaping consistent alt boards requires just as much skill as shaping hp boards.

Go look at a few Burch's. Consistent as fvck. And his boards are both alt and as high performance as they come......as proved by Dane Reynolds, Steph Gilmore, Mick Fanning, Mikey Wright, Bryce Young, et al. How many times has Burch won the Boardroom Show shape-off against veterans who have shaped tens of thousands of boards? 3 times?

Time to start raising their prices then
Hipster kids with rich parents that can afford to pay those prices are limited in supply.

Everyone else just rides normal boards, and the customer ultimately limits the price the shaper can charge in a consumer controlled economy like ours.

We've discussed this before.

Sounds like a butthurt HPSB shaper making boards that are just wrong for 90% of surfers.
Nope!

Very popular shaper here - that's all I'll say.

Butthurt is claiming Draft is an Album ripoff when they look way more like a Burch ripoff if anything.

Disbelief that Kerr jumped ship, etc.

Feeling lost and confused they now have to order a Draft from OZ if they want to surf like Josh Kerr.

But I understand what makes boards work from decades of using them and paying close attention to their design. Give me a couple months to learn a shaping program and I’m pretty sure I could make a pretty fucking good board.
Go for it.

Laugh all you want but computers and machines have usurped the necessity of craftsmanship.
In some ways yes, and in some ways no.

That being said, I have 4 Albums and 3 of them are hand shaped by Matt.

Dand kills on Burch’s. My friend snapped these of him a Burch asym.

Yes we have discussed this before, several times. You keep saying wait until the economy and see if they can still get away with these prices. And guess what, they keep selling. So for the shapers, either quit bitching about it, or charge more like they probably should especially if they have the quality to justify it. Plenty of cheaper options from low pro guys that will shape a "normal" surfboard.

If the high-end hipster stuff was selling the guys at LSD wouldn't have been begging for work on David Scales's podcast saying work has dried up.

Further, the hipster model of doing limited runs of boards allows some to keep their prices high.

To put it in Album terms, Balenciaga can sell 200 pairs of boxer shorts at $1000/each and make $20K which is a whole lot more cost effective than selling 2000 pairs at $10/each.
