Anyone ridden any of his boards? Bought on impulse a 5'6" x 20" x 2 1/2, 5 fin bat tail convertible otr the other day while dropping off some boards at a shop. Was looking to thin my quiver some, and wasn't looking to add a board, but this one just kind of spoke to me.

I ordered about half a dozen boards from Ian. Decent shapes but pretty poor glass jobs.

One thing that I always found strange about Ian, is he never liked to deviate from his standard dimensions on all his board (kind of defeats the purpose of a custom if you ask me), then I found out why.....Pat Ryan, down in Hermosa Beach, shapes all of Ian's boards on his machine so Ian is basically a scrubber.

Why in the world would you order half a dozen boards from a guy if the quality was sub par? Secondly i am speaking of Aftermath not Spyder, Wright owns his own 3dm shaping machine and all glass is done by Mystery in Huntington, and seems pretty damn bullet proof. Must be a pretty good "scrubber" since he has worked under the likes of Peter Daniels, Spider Murphy, etc.

I had a custom Aftermath standard 6'1 thruster.
It worked great, and the glass job was just fine.

Gotta add my .02, I started getting boards from Ian when he still had the 5 year contract with Spyder and continued for the next 8 years. I also had the first Aftermath lammed board shaped.
Every board went amazing, including a magic 6 channel I took to Oz when I moved there for 2 years.
He shaped many of the magic boards for the Momentum generation in the 90's as well.

Because I had ordered all my boards at once! Ian had scored a deal on a bunch of Australian blanks so he cut me a deal on a multiple board order. So with that, I replenished my whole quiver!
He shaped me a HPLB, mini log, fish, hpsb and a gun. The shapes were great, they just snackled really easily and turned yellow pretty fast. At the time these boards were made Ian was doing the glassing in-house (I saw his laminating room and boards being glassed when I picked up my boards). Since then, if he started outsourcing his glassing for better quality then good for him.

I never said that Ian couldn't shape, it's just sad to see he relies almost solely on the machine these days. And as far as Ian having his own 3DM machine???.....he still stops by Pat Ryan's place a few times a week to either pick up or drop off blanks, so I find it hard to believe he would put that much $$$ into his own shaping machine then take his blanks elsewhere to get them shaped.

Maybe he is just trying to throw Pat a bone and give him some business then???

Follow the link below and scroll down until you see the Aftermath logo, you will see he has had a 3dm in house for 5+ years as well as working with Jon Yow distributing, selling, and training for the 3dm, so I doubt very seriously he is having anyone cut his boards! As for you not saying he wasn't a good shaper, I don't think calling him a scrubber would be considered a compliment. I guess guys like Biolis, Bulkley, Rusty, Hoyte , Gibbons, Roberts, Ryan, etc........ are just scrubbers as well since they all use computer/machine precuts. So from whom do you get your 100% hand shaped magic boards?

So from whom do you get your 100% hand shaped magic boards?
Don Kadowaki - 100% hand shaped, magic boards. Name another shaper that will spend a day to a day and a half perfecting a single blank before sending it off to be laminated.

Not to get off on too much of a tangent (ok maybe a little,) but why would I want a 100% hand shaped board when I can get something way more exact off of a machine?

funny you should ask, i've got one of his double wing battail quad thingees that i bought off the rack in November last year. it's pretty flat so it goes well in mush but the glass and/or foam (US Blanks)is less than exciting (turning yellow around the boxes starting a few weeks ago after a few months hard use when i started riding it in july)....a friend of a friend glasses his shapes out of the same locale as Aftermath (Mystery Glassing) and they look fine so i've written it off as an OTR glass job issue...

A day to a day and a half perfecting a shape? BULLSHIT!!! Put down the pipe boy! Don is a great shaper, I didn't even realize he was still in the South Bay area! But he, nor ANY other shaper that shapes for a living is spending a day and a half on a single shape!!!!!!!!
