I would recommend starting with a 2 week stay at Gland, that's an easy and cheap trip, the waves are the most consistent in Indo and after Gland everywhere else will be relative easy. You will meet a lot of people and maybe some traveling partners.

Stayed at Wylies place (mr. davids) a few years ago, can't recommend it.

Good experience other wise in Sumba, except for merpati leaving us stranded there for a few days. Culture is different there than other parts of Indo and very interesting.

Best quality waves are on the west end, if you've got the time a visit to Sumba is worthwhile, but getting to the different spots will eat up a lot of time and the surf is less likely to deliver.
