Reports still coming in.

Years ago, went right through what is now the epicenter and enjoyed the warm springs with Groovin' and his partner and child at Hanmer Springs.

Those beautiful mountains rising out of the ocean like that have another side to them.

News item one.

My friend Jose Borrero lives near Raglan. He is a PhD and one of the world experts on tsunami. Here are his Facebook comments:

Big ass earthquake just happened in New Zealand. East coast of South Island between Kaikoura and Christchurch. Happened about 560 km south of me, so we only felt it as slow rolling shaking, but it lasted for quite a while, maybe 1-2 minutes.

That sucks to hear. I love that place. Cold water but good surf and vibe (except for the sea lions).

Been on the phone all night with friends all over NZ. Too early to say, and when you start talking about 7.8 there will always be some tragedies, but it does seem like they may have gotten off light, considering what Could Have Been, at least among the small sample size of buddies I'm talking to.

Hope everyone else over there comes out OK, that's one of my favorite places on Earth

Very rude awakening here in Wellington just after midnight, but we got off lightly; some broken glass in the CBD, minor liquefaction on the waterfront, light (so far) structural damage to buildings, commuter services interrupted.

Two people reported dead in the South Island, and lots of scared, shaken people.

Much worse than I initially thought/heard/saw.

Kaikoura completely cut off, and probably will be for a long time; massive landslides have taken out both railway lines and State Highway 1 north and south of Kaikoura. Seabed has risen more than a metre. Surrounding area has seen massive damage.

In Wellington lots of office buildings are toast, even new ones built to very strict EQ codes (but on reclaimed land along the waterfront). Many won't be able to return to work for months. On top of this, we had 80mm of rain yesterday, so the city was cut off, and there have been lots of landslides and damaged buildings. We're fukd.

The one positive was that Christchurch was largely spared.

Tonkin and Taylor, an engineering firm surveying the damage, said a section of the seabed along a 110km stretch of coast north of Kaikoura was lifted by between 2-2.5m. Prof Nicol said this was likely due to "reverse faulting".

Looks like the surf spots like Mangamanu and Meatworks, will be forever different. I really liked spending time in that area.

I was camping near Whangamata when this happened. Too far to feel the quake, but getting that wakeup call at 0200 to evacuate for a possible tsunami was a little unnerving.

Looks like a 7.3 off Fukushima prefecture an hour ago.

Edit: Hey iceman, you got a Roy meeting in the works? Or a hot spring beach soak planned?

Damn Fukushima again. 6.9 this time and 10km deep, and 50km offshore.

The big one that hammered Fukushima before was 9.1 and 8.1km deep, and 36km offshore. Quite a bit larger by several orders of magnitude.
