Where to buy or how do you prepare the abalone for inlay?

I just buy sheets online. The process is basic marquetry. The sheets tend to be slightly different thickness than veneer (sometimes thicker, sometimes thinner) so you have to be careful. Generally the glass and hotcoat give you enough thickness that any difference does not telegraph through.

I cut with an exact knife. Veneer is easy. The ab is much harder. I put masking tap on it it before I cut to prevent it from chipping.

Hey, wait, am I giving away trade secrets???
Appreciate I have tried to chip and shape abalone rough from shell very difficult and even drilling got to go slow and easy.
