For Viper Surfing Fins Fred Simpson's 75th birthday (2013), I made a poster of Mike Stewart and had bodyboarders (and some bodysurfers) sign it. How many world champs signed it?
Kelly Crowder, Oahu outer reef, probably 1990s, photog unknown. Everywhere around the world there are underground riders charging hard with little fanfare whatsoever. Kelly for one has been venturing out to Oahu's outer reefs for decades, many times solo, and has nabbed some massive ones just for his own pure satisfaction. This spot has recently blown up due to recent coverage but I'm sure Kelly still ventures to other arenas. Cheers to all the underground riders out there.

Interestingly many bodyboarders have turned into exceptional water photographers, including: Jeff, Scott Aichner, Daniel Russo, Tim Jones, Todd Glaser, (most likely) Zak Noyle, and others. Theories abound as to why they are so prolific behind the lens. I think they all have good ocean sense and positioning instincts.

In 1996, Mike Stewart made an incredible journey, chasing a swell from Tahiti to Alaska. This was the newspaper clipping from the now defunct Star Bulletin (Hawaii) of the epic adventure. It was also documented by Surfline: http://mikestewart.surfline.com/3/
In the formative years of bodyboarding (late 70s/early 80s), Tom Boyle was one of the few people capturing the burgeoning sport/lifestyle. A champion rider in his own right, Boyle became one of the senior photographers and editors for BodyBoarding magazine, documenting this new pursuit with exciting images and stories.
Not content with just the print media, Boyle took the next logical step and started shooting and producing bodyboarding videos. He ultimately churned out 15 videos, including the Bodyboarders Video Magazine series.

Laminar Flow, Kainen Swaggers, Off the Wall, 12/23/20. Bodyboard design continues to progress with material, flex and shape designs. Hydrodynamic studies on rails and channels could help improve board performance even more. Oh, and underwater shots can look pretty too.

Went to high school with Manny Vargas and Jackie Fisher in IB. Mike Conley was another local stand out. I bought a Science board and some fins for close out days... have used them exactly 3 times in 10 years

Hank Zeevat, Brenneckes (Kauai, HI), 1980 (over forty years ago!). Back then, there were no rules on how to ride. It really wasn't much of a sport or a scene yet. We just got together, had fun and did whatever felt good. Here's Hank sitting backwards on his board, about to get barreled while throwing a shaka behind his head. Innocent times.
Father/daughter tandem, Sandy Beach, 9/7/20. The way bodyboarding was originally marketed was that it was a whole lot of fun. Since then, we've sold it as a lifestyle, a way to be cool, a sport, a professional sport, an extreme sport, a hardcore pursuit, etc. But when it comes down to it, it's still all about having fun. Wynn and her daddy, all smiles.
