She has to slow down. Speed limits aren't usually that arbitrary. Encinitas has 50mph zones in a couple spots so it's not like they're opposed to 50mph traffic. In this region, a 35mph zone on a primary or secondary traffic arteriole happens when they expect cross traffic and pedestrians. We get vehicle-on-pedestrian accidents in certain spots along El Camino Real in Carlsbad and Encinitas on a regular basis. It ain't no joke.
The stopping distance for the average driver is literally twice as long at 50mph (~175ft) as it is at 35mph (~83ft). THAT's the reason your wife should take the posted limit seriously, because if everyone does 50 in a 35 it increases everyone's risks.
Plus, if she got written at 50 that usually means shes exceeding 50 on a regular basis. That's not good.
