Each party drafts their favorite prospects, like in pro sports. Each party goes out looking for the best, smartest candidates. They select from a variety of trades, and educational backgrounds, but probably a number of the best law school graduates. These draftees go to 4 years of intense training to become president. They live on campus. They are all under surveillance 24/7 to weed out any bad, shifty ones, that were breaking the rules. They are paid very well while they attend presidential school, so they are motivated to do their best. They must WANT to be president. They study 4 years of: political science, history, economics, civics, etc. Trump would have never survived such a screening. When the candidates graduate from presidential school, they can run for president.

How NOT to get a good President is to have the two major parties hold a series of primaries where only the most motivated of the party's "base" votes, so the candidates have to present themselves as wildly left or right as possible. That ensures the famous "pivot to the center" for the general, ensuring the candidates bona fides as a lying sack of sh!t are on full public display.

max 90 day primary campaigning
max 90 day general election campaigning
no fundraising before those 90 days
eliminate super-PACs
no anonymous fundraising
open primaries
eliminate winner take all primaries
force states to apportion electors based on the popular vote in that state
ranked choice voting

Any of these things is an improvement over what we've got now
