i feel the same way about the test driven content development that creates the endless fire-hose of fear porn being distributed by the msm "news" outlets

it needs to stop, but trying to legislate it away will likely have terrible unintended consequences
fear of what?

for example transgenderism, drag queens, BLM, antifa,... that sort of thing?
yes! but that is just a small subset of the things that are used to trigger that fear response that keeps people engaged.

ps - interesting that you focused on things that target people who are not ideologically aligned with yourself. i think its harder to see the things that target ourselves.

Easy solution is to not watch. Unlike with social media algorithms, you know exactly what you’re getting with cable news.

that is my recommendation and (usually) my personal practice - although sometimes i do watch so that i can discover what people are reacting to and what is molding their realities

What's interesting is that you singled out only MSM outlets.

That was Kid's point that wooshed over your head.

Of course it's all data driiven. Its a formula. Was there a queen? Yes. Did she die? Yes. Did mourning go on for days? Yes. Did Biden give an important speech during that time? Yes. Did any network broadcast the speech? No. Do drag queens read to children at twenty libraries in this nation of 400 million people? Yes. Why are people critiquing an entire political party based on that? Your algorithms.

so they are not my algorithms, but it seems that we do agree that test driven content development is warping peoples' perspective in a way that is damaging to our society as a whole?

It's absolutely damaging but it's not the algorithm that's doing it, it's people's thirst to have their biases constantly confirmed. (Look at GromsDad)

It's like when you don't want to beleive the facts about COVID vaccines, you will seek an outlet that will confirm that bias. The algorithm will oblige with providing you with more disinformation.

And MSM is a small player in comparison to the right leaning media, who has many, many more eyeballs and who you failed to mention.

When companies like YouTube selectively curate content they expose themselves to legal action like this, don't they?
"selectively curate" ....

just like I said...it's delicious to watch these maroons whinge about shadowbans

500 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute of the day

lol

Well, he has a point.

YouTube serves him with fresh Dan Bongonino drivel every day.

That's pretty selective.

A public utility is an entity that supplies the public with gas, water, electricity, trash service etc. Cable and broadband are utilities too. They're deemed necessary to society, and would tend to operate as monopolies if not regulated.
As is phone service.

You're a lawyer and you know what a common carrier is.

Social media platforms such as Twitter and YouTube act as common carriers. Newer types of common carriers.

They should be subject to the same regulations as all the others.

How is social media a utility? All social media or just some? How can Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google etc. all be deemed monopolies when they're in competition with each other?
They're all common carriers.

Just different types specializing in different things.

Regulate them accordingly.

How is social media essential for anything?

Holy invalid comparison reaching.

I'm not on Facebook or Twitter and I'm still living.

Try do that without the phone service or running water.

What's really funny is that you don't consider internet service a utility (which it should be) but want social media networks to be a utility. :roflmao:

No they don't. They operate on utilities (internet and phone) but aren't utilities themselves.

But let's assume they do for argument's sake. Utilities are regulated not just because they're big, but because they provide a vital societal service which would likely be monopolized were it not regulated.

Does any single social media platform provide a service society can't live without? If facebook died, what would happen? People would just move to google and twitter and youtube and instagram and Truth Social and Snapchat and BeReal and a thousand others. No vital service, and certainly no threat of monopoly. And the barrier to entry with utilities tends to be huge. But new social media apps are introduced daily, each with it's own slant. See Truth Social as the perfect example of how easy it is to launch a new site to compete with Twitter.

And unlike phones and internet and gas and electricity, these services are free. Even if Facebook had a full monopoly on social media, it's not costing the consumer anything, so what are you protecting?

I honestly don't care if social media goes away. It's great for some stuff, but a cancer for other stuff. If you think regulating Twitter would make it a great space, however, I'd suggest you're wrong. In fact, the minute Twitter loses the ability to control what it allows on its site is the minute Twitter shuts down completely.

Those who were against the Net Neutrality bill, need to STFU about treating social networks like a utility.

Talking about motivated reasoning, sheesh.

Not quite. Aside from calling 9/11, which many will never do in their lifetime, phone service is on par with the internet in terms of how "essential" they both are in today's world. Good luck applying for a job, managing your finances, keeping up with B/C tier friends/relatives without the internet. Social media messaging apps have pretty much replaced email for most non-work related communication for most of us who don't have AOL email address.

Technically doable, but not realistic. Pretty much all schooling requires the internet now.
