Some thoughts:
- JJ is on a 6'2 Ghost, which is a "longer" board in the sense that it's similar to a 6'6 or so with the front cut off and reshaped. Then again, the "average" surfer would probably need a proper semi-gun or bigger out there. The fitness and wave reading ability of the CT guys, especially the really elite ones, cannot be understated.
- Maybe the comparison of Kale to Salsa is silly since they surf so differently and such different waves. Kale is a very good surfer. I am mostly trying to say that I find Kale's surfing relatable, much more so than most pro surfers. To the original point, I think it's fair to call this a board test for the "everday" surfer, as long as your definition of "everyday" surfer is one who is competent, experienced and wants to try to rip.
- I liked the video about trying a longer board and I agree with the premise it would probably help my surfing to jump on a 6'0 or 6'1 and get better at using the rail. I don't think the places I surf are really conducive to this though and it would probably replace my ghost in terms of wave range, so it doesn't seem worth the investment. If I were going to indo or HI or something for an extended trip, I'd consider it.
- I loved the video with Zouvi. His description of the 72 makes it seem like it would be easy for an "everyday" surfer to surf well in okay to good waves and this seems to be backed up by Kales experience in both the ocean and the pool. I was really impressed with how well that board went in the pool when he struggled on other rippy boards there. I don't exactly have a hole in my quiver where this board would go but this has definitely got me considering one. The stonk 5'10 x 19 x 2.5 at 28.2 L looks like it would be great.
