"Here’s a question for all you Surf fanatics. Did the invention of the thruster actually screw up surfing??

From a style aspect or are we just soo obsessed with maneuvers That nobody really gives a crap what you look like in the water"

What you guys think? I think twins force you to surf with more patience and more rail.

No. Watch an old surf movie and at least 50% of the surfing on single fins was horrible to watch. The guys who truly surfed well on them were really talented but even they had a lot more awkward moments than your average pro on a thruster.

There's a better argument that competitive surfing killed style but you can ignore that and watch the stylish guys who have carved out careers outside of the tour. If Curren were coming up today he would have done the whole Search thing without needing to do the tour.

it changed the long drawn out power bottom turn into a double pump two staged thing and basically made things a little more herky-jerky. Sort of eliminated the need to find the clean true power line in a wave because you could generate your own speed with a pump or two. moved things from the rail to the fins. But it wasn't that much better before hand, maybe a little smoother and slower. You only see that slowness now when it's big and powerful enough to overcome the tow-in of the outside fins.

when surfing was boring and slow

riding 16-17" wide rockets, getting your ass handed to you but coming up smiling all day

curren looked cooler than joel despite putting in the effort to truly rip a shortboard. many do.

this guy chits all over joel tudor.

Harley rips.

Tough to compare him to Joel. If you've never watched Joel in person, particularly in the presence of other loggers for comparison, he's hard to appreciate. The way he navigates sections while on the nose and the economy of movement is pretty amazing. It's cool to see how deceivingly LITTLE he appears to be doing at times. Luckily for him, it ages well too.

Also Torren Martyn and Mikey February (as of late at least) are surfing twin fins.

I think the move toward potato chip thrusters and back has pushed older twin fin designs to loose some bulk and gain some bite and given them a push in the right direction.

Unrelated, would someone please tell Mikey Feb to stop with the stupid karate kick bullshit. It really distracts from his otherwise smooth surfing.
