Got to make a quick trip back to the states next week ... while i'm there thinking about picking up a keel fin set - to give me some additional options. I was looking out on the True Ames site - the Lovelace Keel and Piggyback Keel templates look sick .... as well as the Danny Hess Noriega Keel set. Anyone have any experience/feedback with any of these sets?

For your troubles ... Valentine's Day Morning - Nicaragua

No experience with those fins, but take a look at the McCallum Keels from Captain Fin Co. They have worked well in the boards I have used them in.

I’ve used the piggy backs on a fish (traditional outline with modern rails and bottom contours) and found them to not hold or drive very well. I’m probably just too heavy for them (185-190). Also used them on a performance twin and found that AMT and the futures EN had better hold.

I’ve settled on using the Hobie keel on the toe side and the Chanel islands keel (which I got from true Ames) on the heel side some of the time and Hobie for both some of the time.

I like the look of the Noriega better than the Lovelace but haven’t tried either.

How much do you weigh? I agree about the Piggyback's being a little loose for heavier riders.

I've got tons of keel fin sets and my favorite so far is the Surf Squared Keels. They're big and raked but with a finer, more swept back tip that gives them a little more twang and more predictable release through turns in my experience. I've also heard good things about the Futures AMK's and I just got a set but have yet to use them.

It looks like the Hobie keels are sold out. Those Hess's look good I don't think you could go wrong there.

These look interesting but don't think you can get them in the states.

I'm 160 give or take a couple lbs and have been pretty happy with the futures k2 keel (fiberglass) that came with my TKF. I tried the Hess Noriega fins and they felt like too much fin

Lovelace keels = probably as good as hold and drive as you’ll get.
Power Drive keels = couldn’t get them to work at all.
Hobie keels = great for a fast point with loads of drive.
S Wings = twin set , couldn’t get the grip of them , then put them in a quad board with smaller trailers and they are great!
CI keels = great all rounder in a fish .
That’s the keels I’ve tried and still have other than the Krypt Powerdrive.

Yes, I was told that a lot of people who have the CI Fish (the latest iteration) have been snatching them up because of the stupid too-far-forward fin box placement on those things.

Those Hess's look good I don't think you could go wrong there.
Like I said earlier, they do look good for, IMHO, a smaller (than me) rider.

Size wise is goes...

Hobie
Merrick
Lovelace
Hess

PS: The Machado keels have me curious.

The ones I'm pretty curious to try are the Captain Fin Jeff Mccallum. I really like the shape and they have a good amount of area.

Anyone given them a spin?

Best keels I ever had were Lokbox CI turbo keels...loved them until the Pavel keel hauler I had died and Lokbox went out of fashion.

The new CI Merrick Keels - appear to be hard to come by as well.

Doing a little comparison with the specs:
Rasta: A 24.59 H 4.77 B 6.87
Machado: A 25.39 H 5.17 B 6.57
K2: A 22.25 H 4.63 B 6.34
CI Merrick: A 25.54 H 5.15 B 6.46
Lovelace Keel: A 24.71 H 5.18 B 6.62
Lovelace PB: A 21.96 H 5.12 B 5.75
Hess Noriega: A 24.56 H 5.05 B 6.30
McCallum Keel: A 24.7 H 5.1 B 6.2

And yeah - those McCallum's look pretty sweet!

Looks like the Hobie Keels are sold out as well .... tough choice between the Lovelace Keel, Noriega Keel and the McCallum Keels. Looks like the Noriega has a shorter tip versus the McCallum - otherwise specs are pretty close - thinking they may release a little easier.

Captains Christenson Keel Especials are a bit more upright than the K2s and come in at a little over 24. They also sit a little further forward in the box. These are the black solid glass ones, not the red and black hex fins of a similar name.

I have a new ci fish. looking to get some fins for it. leaning towards either AM-keels or McCallum Keels. any idea which template have more cant? and are these fins made in the same material? which has more flex?
