How about we scrap the current convoluted tax codes and start fresh with a plain and simple flat personal and corporate income tax.
I think this horse had been beaten to death. Flat taxes don't hurt rich people, but hammer poor people.

If a family makes $500K/year, a 10% flat tax doesn't hurt them at all. Worst case scenario is they have to take their skiing vacay in Aspen instead of St. Moritz.

If a family makes $50K/year, a 10% flat tax hurts a lot. Worst case scenario is they have to decide which meals the family doesn't get to eat.

Luckily under the current system a family making $50k/year is taxed more than that

You’re halfway getting it. Now you just have to realize that just because someone makes more than you it doesn’t mean “they can afford it” nor is it moral to take more from them

Also, 10% of 50k is 5k, 10% of 500k is 50k. That’s a hell of a lot more than a ski trip

Tell us more about the branches of government dummy. Only someone as dumb as you would be dumb enough to believe all of those agents were only going to target people making over $400k.

The problem lies in the 30 years of transition deserved by switching to a flat tax vs the instant transition proposed by flat tax advocates like you.

A person works 30 years and pays taxes with the government's promise that his tax money will support him when he retires and becomes unable to work. Now you want to start back up, forcing this labor-impaired person to get off the public dole and to pay his fair share of taxes. If he hadn't been paying taxes he would be robustly able to pay his fair share, but you took all of that money away from him.

Of course the idea that a worker's social security and pension payments are being squirreled away somewhere is a myth anyway. Workers support retirees. But that's the problem. If workers weren't paying retirement taxes then they WOULD be creating retirement savings. Our government does no such thing.

Agreed

this is why we have to get younger people on board with this truth so we can start the transition off of SSI earlier in a generation’s careers rather than later

Can you imagine the balance you would have if your payroll SSI had been funneled into a 401k instead? Down to every sh!t job you worked as a teenager?

This issue here is that the person making $50K is paying up 22%. The person making $500K has a tax professional working the system to pay as little as possible (<15%).
If we removed all loopholes and taxed personal income and corporate net income at let's say 5%, it would be a massive windfall for the IRS.
