The Narrative on TV is that this is good vs. evil, but the reality is we steadily added NATO countries eastward after the collapse of the USSR after promising we wouldn't. Finally, we fomented a rainbow revolution in the Ukraine in 2014 and then discussed Ukraine joining NATO which Putin has been clear is his line in the sand. It was only after this that Putin started the wars in Eastern Ukraine, just like he didn't invade South Ossetia until Georgia indicated they were going to join NATO In 2008.
We could easily avoid this by telling Ukraine to sign a treaty with Russia that they won't join NATO and stop meddling there.
The people on TV are chronic liars about all this stuff and most work for defense companies. Few have been outside DC.
