Michael German, a former FBI agent who worked undercover against domestic terrorists during the 1990s, knows that the white power sympathies within police departments hamper domestic terrorism cases. “The 2015 FBI counter-terrorism guide instructs FBI agents, on white supremacist cases, to not put them on the terrorist watch list as agents normally would do,” he says. “Because the police could then look at the watchlist and determine that they are their friends.” The watchlists are among the most effective techniques of counter-terrorism, but the FBI cannot use them. The white supremacists in the United States are not a marginal force; they are inside its institutions.

Holy sh!t, the Third Reich, Soviet Union, and Imperial Japan had colonial ambitions??

Groundbreaking stuff here! Next they'll reveal that the Pearl Harbor attack was part of broader offensive to neutralize the US Pacific fleet and establish dominance and pilfer raw goods in Southeast Asia.

BRB gonna write some new books about British kids being wizards and some moody bored American girl whose into fantasy/bestiality. Gonna stack chips.

Overy's thesis is quite a stretch. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence, most of which is from contemporaneous sources rather than historical analysis, that describes the war in moralistic, rather than imperial, terms. Yes, Hitler and Tojo both despertely wanted their own empires (Hitler's dream was global whereas Tojo's was pan-Pacific), but the Allies' desire was not to establish their own empires but beat back the forces of totalitarian autocracies. Yeah, America got some islands in the Pacific, but we gave most of them up within a couple of decades. Finally, Pacific islanders on islands liberated from the Japanese were universally very apprciative of being liberated from their oppressive occupiers.

Most of the Allies had already lost their empires in the aftermath of WWI. All of the Allies were fighting a defensive battle for the most part

Both the US and USSR took advantage of their position to create the very global empires they were fighting against

Your take reads like something from the 50s

The main Allies were France, the UK, America, Canada, Australia, China, and the USSR. The USA got most of Micronesia but not much else. The UK, Canada, France, China, and Australia got nothing, territory-wise.

Our postwar empire of Micronesia and the Philippines didn't last long - the Philippines gained their independence right after the war and Micronesia is now almost entirely independent republics except for the Marianas I think.

The British empire was already on the way out and really fell apart in the decade or two after the war, same with France. The Soviets came out the big winners but even then they lost all those Iron Curtain countries after the wall came down, hence the Ukraine war.

Whatever point Overy's book makes, WW2 sounded the death knell for big empires.

Yet the US still exists right now

WW2 sounded the death knell for traditional big empires. The US just does it on the sly now instead of outright. Same sh!t, different smell

You're forgetting how spheres of influence exist nowadays. The US has financial control of both the UN and NATO, and it's dollar is the world currency

Same sh!t, different smell

WWII was the best thing that ever happened to the United States in our search for Empire
