If you've heard about a container ship losing around 40 containers offshore of Washington State and Vancouver Island, here's a photo of it from earlier today plus a copy and paste of some updates from the Coast Guard as they rescued the crew etc.

ContainerShipOnFire.jpg

UPDATE:
(1744) FIRE BRAND command terminated, clear and returning to Harbour
UPDATE:
(1731) COAST GUARD has removed a total of 10 crew members abandoning ship. The Container ship captain and other crew members have chosen to remain with the ship.
UPDATE: (1718) COAST GUARD will be attempting to rescue a further 6 more crew members abandoning ship.
Fire Brand will be clear and heading in at approx 1830 if no longer required
UPDATE: (17:10)
COAST GUARD is attempting a rescue of 10 crew members starboard side/ mid ship
UPDATE:
Firebrand will not be heading in at 1700 for a crew change as they will be standing by for an "abandoned ship" crew to take on board.
Previously:
Firebrand, Cape Calvert, Cape Naden, Pacific Scout responded to the incident. Some of the Zim Kingston crew members are reported missing.
Firebrand will have to switch crews at 1700 depending as the weather conditions are getting worse.
The initial call for assistance was received by Victoria Coast Guard Marine Communications & Traffic Services (CCG MCTS) who continue to assist with coordination of this tragedy and handle direct comms with all involved.
The Zim Kingston, recently in The News, for losing 40 containers off the Juan de Fuca Straits is now on fire off Victoria, BC -fire reportedly started in hazardous containers, with large storm approaching this is a very dangerous situation.

Yikes.

Take care.

Update on fire onboard container ship.

Note some of the retarded comments about this. We have morons up here too. LOL

Apparently they have been spraying water on the hull of the ship trying to cool things down as one of the chemicals in the containers can't handle water being directly sprayed on it. It's called Potassium amylxanthate and used in mining, apparently.

Lots of concern about hazardous air quality around the ship as well.

Not a good scene.

Take care.

Have to use carbon dioxide to extinguish by breaking the chemical chain reaction of combustion. The oxygen molecules in water just make it burn hotter. Dry chemical extinguishing agent works too, but I don't know how they could accomplish applying either under these circumstances. Will take a larger brain than mine to mitigate.
It's stable when kept cool and dry.
