Heavy.

So you were hit by a car or your back gave out after or surf, or both?

from Oregon, now SD
Recently herniated a disk while moving. Felt like I had pulled a muscle in my butt, didn't think much of it figured stretching and taking it easy would do the trick. No back pain. After about four days of not being able to bend over at the waist at all I called up my dad who's a PT.

Did McKenzie extensions for a week and now I'm on low weight high volume kettlebell swings for a while. He told me to count on minor to moderate sciatica symptoms for a year or more. I can surf, but definitely have limited range of motion. The first time I went out I straight couldn't do a cutback, my hip and leg just refused to turn.

sh!t sucks, protect your back kids.

I'm on a waiting list to have my L5, S1 fused.

Will update this thread when it happens and my road to recovery, as well as honest feedback on its effectiveness.

Sorry to hear you need to have that done, ugh. Hope it offers you relief!

I had 2 level cervical disc replacement about 3 yrs ago and was a life saver. They’re not effective on lumbar spine unfortunately

Thank you @Swallow Tail . I’ve had enough of pain, and after trying everything, I decided that being on anti-inflammatories simply isn’t sustainable.

instead of fusion, can u go for disc replacement?

tim hendricks had 3 discs replaced and seems to still surf.

It’s apparently not the thing to do at the L5.S1. According to my surgeon, there’s no reason my surfing would be impeded in any way after I’ve healed.

I made sure to let him know how important surfing it is to me.

doesn't fusion increase chance of discs above to also herniate?
It's possible/higher chance for those disk to also degenerate, yes.
Will bridge that gap if/when I get to it.

What's in my favour here, is that even if the one above goes after 10 years or whatever, a L4,L5,S1 fusion should also not interfere with surfing i any significant way, certainly if successful, I'd be better off with a little less movement, than with surfing with the amount of pain I currently do.

Can't tell you howe many takeoffs go much slower due to pain, I don't compress and release due to not being able to crouch down quickly, etc.

L4/L5/S1 fused some time ago.

Still surfing.

:waving::shaka:

Say hello to my LB friends!
Has it influenced your surfing, and if so, how?
at 41 y/o, can I expect to be throwing rotors like Italo after the operation? Full disclosure, I can't do them now, but like to know that I have the option :D

Also, how long did it take you to get back in the water after the operation?

Yikes. Best of luck to you, Waxy! FWIW, Taylor Knox also has a fusion from a childhood accident.
I forgot about that, but think it was actually a genetic thing from a quick google?

Either way, you've helped me get to an answer about how I'll go about training after I recover enough to work out. I think I'll sign up to his ARC method program after the bones have fused.

Minimum effective dose is a thing.

Yet I would apply this in my teaching and be scorned.
