I spent a good part of the nineties living in ski town that had an amazing free bus system. Busses ran till 1 am, so the last few leaving the main bus station in town were ALWAYS filled with drunken ski bums leaving the bars to go home. When the bus pulled into the station, it usually had about 10 minutes before departing again, and the driver would typically go into the station to pee and get coffee. And they would leave the bus running to keep the inside warm, and leave the door open so passengers could embark. If the driver was at all perceived to be "late" in getting back to the bus, the waiting passengers could give him or her some serious heckling upon return. It was common to board a bus that didn't have a driver quite yet.
Well, I had a buddy that was a bus driver who had quite the sense of humor, and pulled this prank a few times:
When he returned to his bus for his next route, wearing a jacket to cover his uniform, instead of getting in the driver's seat, he would find a passenger's seat about half way back in the bus. Waiting for the other passengers to become restless, he joined the fray, pretending to be drunk and loudly saying things like "where's the fvckn driver?!!" and "If he doesn't show up soon, im gonna drive this bus myself!" You can imaging the roar of the crowd when he stumbled into the drivers seat, closed the door, and pulled out of the station in the middle of a heavy snowfall. All those passengers probably still tell the story of when the drunk guy jacked the bus and took them all home.

This is fcking hilarious.

Rest In Peace, Tim, and thinking of you, Subway.

Typing this with one hand and holding a bourbon in the other, which I will raise for Tim.

Love the school bus story, as I too have a few magical stories from my time of working in Manhattan before marrying the SD native,Mrs. Tanner, and heading West.

Cheers Tim

headed up to the wake shortly. There literally may be 80-100 of us getting on the 3:16 to Pleasantville (yes it's a real place, and it is indeed pleasant)

The go Fund me leapt from 15K to 30k in just the last 6 hours. such a quiet, mellow dude, yet had such an out-sized impact on people

Thanks fam. Sad stuff. Wife is so brave, kids are angels. Gonna see maybe if they want to use our home at the beach for a week after the official stuff is done. Just have a little quiet early September stay cation and let the kids play on the beach and have friends and family join or whatever. We’d get an air BnB. I know when my dad died it was very therapeutic getting outside, surfing, even golfing. Like, you’re going to be grieving a long time, you’re kind of in shock, may as well try to ease it with some self care and enjoyable settings and activities. I know for certain Tim would would want her to just chill as best she can. Its been a hard 2 years for them and a sad ending.

My wife found out her dad passed away the moment we landed on our last kauai visit. And as traumatic as that was, and mere months after my own fathers death, Kauai folded my wife, folded all of us, into her warmth and beauty, and I cannot imagine a more gentle entry into an unavoidably sad phase of life

Shit I’ve got miles maybe I’ll fly them someplace. Long Beach has its charms but it ain’t Kauai
