just back this afternoon from a week in montana. driftboating, flyfishing, laughing and beering down the upper missouri river. my amigo just bought a motherfucking magnificent 10 acre riverfront lodge there.

we caught most rainbows and browns on teeny size 20 dryflies = size of a pencil lead and on only 2 to 3lb tippet. these trout are extreme 'roid rage' fighters with some being completely unlandable.

our fishing ego's were stoked to find out we averaged 15 to 30 fish a day while the guide boats were only 2 to 5.

if only montana had an ocean...

Nice! Outside of Three Forks somewhere?

We're heading out to Hamilton for a week this Saturday. Quite a few river closures right now but thankfully there's a spring creek on the property where we're staying.

That is awesome Q_Surf... sign me up!

So stoked for you!

You caused me to think back on the last time I went flyfishing and it's been about 4 years. Way too long. I will have to remedy that.

That is a beautiful hen you have there. Nice and shiney with good color and markings!!

15-30 fish caught and released per day. That is epic flyfishing!

Were you fishing 6X tippet? What weight rod?

Damm.. you got me all worked up!

Congrats to you man!! So stoked!

his property is next to craig - 4 miles down from the wolf creek dam.

yeah closures for low/warm water are really toughening it up in the big sky this year. we had some nice thunder boomers the last few days to cool it off some and that helped keep the feed pods rolling all day. hoppers were all over the banks but not getting grabs. where we were fishing is a tailwater off the reservoir bottom so the water stays cool.

spring creeks i stopped at silver creek in idaho yesterday morning on my way back. a few fish in a few hours of really tough mid-day fishing. but the visuals kept me in the game...

keen,

yeah, 6x flourocarbon tippet with 7x getting more grabs but being completely hopeless for the strength and size of the fish. we lost a shitload of fish and flies! the biggest fish are strong and smart enought to pinball you through the weedbeds.

big bad leroy brown

That's a great photo of the Brown!

7x is so frustrating. It does get you more grabs but in big or fast water you can kiss a bigger fish goodbye almost every time.

Silver Creek is a trip. Did you float it with a tube or did you have permission to get on somewhere? I only have fished it once but it was a good day.

Did you fish the Big Wood or the Little Wood when you were passing through ID?

Too much work and not enough fishing for me.

7x was just stupid with jordan-esque fish in fast moving water and weeds.

picture this: long-line upstream casts in swirly currents to nervous "feed pods" of several dozen BIG fish surface mouthing size 20-24 tricos and p.m.d.'s in only a foot of water right up against the weedbank. especially during mid-day light they were refusing (and shutting down) anything attached to 5x so we switched to 6x for the grabs.

there were other methods that produced when the feed frenzy dropped off. i have a royal trude pattern that pulls fish grabs when NOTHING else will. combine that with a disco-beadhead dropper and it's almost as good as an earthworm.

keen - never been to the morning wood waters of idaho. you sayin' i should???

j_p where the f were you when i lived in s.crz.???! i always looked for someone to show me that drainage.

i live minutes away from the greatest steelhead flyfishing in the u.s. let me know if you guys are ever in the area of eugene.

What is this fly fishing you speak of?

Those terms are all foreign to me but those numbers and photos are universal!

Sick catch, mate!

My fingers smell like fish. At least I think it's my fingers. The fishy smell seems to be following me around everywhere. Maybe I left the cat food out too long again. Whew!

Very nice and a lot tougher fishing then we have.
Right now it's all about the Pinks (salmon) either in the river or along the beaches, wherever you find them.
Local kid caught this one the other day in the Campbell.

Take care.

Right on Q surf!

You've inspired me to bring my flyrod to work today and try bucktailing for Coho. Lately I've been jigging for Halibut and catching mostly Ling Cod, Yellow eyes and the odd spring. I've yet to catch a salmon bucktailing, but I've only tried it a few times. Wish me luck!

hilldo - we watched an old wrinkled montana codger show up with antique spin-gear and worms and proceed to yank 1, 2, and 3 football thick rainbows out in right front of some flyfishing guideboats with clients. the look on their faces was fargging CLASSIC!

hump - nice humpy pic! is that where you get your namesake?

our oregon landlocked kokanee run from the lake up a certain river channel later this month to turn red, grow teeth, distend jaws, and spawn. all the biggest lake 'bows go up the channel after them so they're all grouped up in ridiculous numbers and size. a small red or pink fly gets killed.

NaCl-dawg, please describe this "bucktailing"

cohos - where you at?

our salmon will start to sniff freshwater this month. i love stripping a clouser minnow in the rivermouths for kings and cohos with sealice still attached.

Bucktailing, is trolling with usually an 8weight flyrod and some heavy test in saltwater. Normally drag the fly (shiny baitfish patterns) in the prop wash. Coho are often near the surface and come to inspect all the bubbles. Then wham! you're playing an ocean fresh Coho on a fly rod. I speak as if I know what I'm doing, I'm definitely new to bucktailing. I've caught plenty of Coho, and chum and Steelhead in rivermouth estuaries in the fall, but this bucktailing is a new challenge for me. I live in Tofino, west coast of Vancouver Island. Great fishing, marginal but very consistent surf. It's pretty nice you can saltwater fish in the morning, surf and freshwater fly fish in the evening. Makes for a great day.
