I have a friend that has shipped many out of LA... if no one gives you good info, I'll check with him and see who he recomends.

I never did. One of those things--if you live here...

On the radio there has been some recent sparring between companies. New company Horizon Lines touted that they ship vehicles in boxes. Matson fired back with the "experience" and "people you can trust" ad.

Apparently, there is a third, Pasha Hawaii. Not sure if all the prices are still valid.

One thing I did hear was that you might not want to stuff the car with other items--might not reach the destination. Recommend you ask.

I shipped one last summer using Matson.

I don't think you have many options as far as shipping companies go. There's Matson, Horizon, and maybe one or two others. Pretty sure Matson is the biggest and most popular.

Matson cost a little under $1000 from Long Beach to Honolulu. It can take anywhere from two to six weeks, so it's a good idea to plan ahead.

Your car has to be completely empty when you ship it. So, you can't ship anything else inside the car, which is kind of a drag. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Matson, about $900 from Seattle.

Oh, and when they say, "not responsible for any items left within vehicle" what they really mean is, "the car jockeys WILL be rifling through your car looking for anything you left in it, and you can seriously kiss that visor full of all your favorite CDs and your cup-holder full of loose change goodbye".

I ***** you not, they took my CDs, my spare change and an old DURAN DURAN tape!! It's like the disclaimer "not responsible" is carte blanche for the filthy little theives to take whatever they want. They are responsible for your stereo and system though, so they didn't steal my subs and boxes.

Just a warning.

Sent my truck to my brother on Oahu last year, cost 800.00 or so out of Long Beach. Pretty easy and painless with Matson.

I think the way they've combatted the liability issues is by just plain not letting you keep anything in the car that isn't literally attached. When we shipped our car, they actually went through the entire car with us when we dropped it off making sure that we removed everything. There was even a set of jumper cables that was underneath the floor of the trunk by the spare tire that they made us take out.

They DO NOT allow you to ship anything in your car. I guess this is a change they've made in the last few years.

It pays to call the ports and see what the backlogs look like. I shipped one car from San Pedro, then a month later shipped another from Oakland and stepped onto a plane. The one shipped from oakland arrived in hawaii two weeks later, a month ahead of the one shipped out of san pedro.

If you ship to an outer island keep in mind that matson really only ships to oahu, then you're on contract shipping to get to the final destination (Young Brothers does it for the big island). The contracted shipper may be less organized than matson.

And those bastards stole my waterproof seatcovers

DURAN DURAN

At least you were smart enough to get the Culture Club outta there. Can't have them stealing all the good "chuggin' to the oldies" tunes yo. What would Friday night become without a little Tears for Fears (The Smiths if you feel like offing yerself).

They've got a name for people like you H.I. That name is called "recidivism."

They told me ahead of time to take everything out of my car, thus absolving them of any liability. I simply neglected to take out my cds since I was using them until the car was actually dropped off. Unfortunately, nobody checked the car with me to verify that I'd gotten my 12 favorite CDs out of the visor.

I understand not wanting to have any responsibility for anything that isn't bolted down... But the fact that you can actually COUNT on the fact that they will steal anything that isn't bolted down really kind of irked me. Like, "watch your own *****, because the people who handle your car are a bunch of low-lifes, and we aren't going to be responsible for those motherfuckers"...

I'm pretty sure I also left a CD IN the CD player by accident and that was liberated as well. It was Miles Davis "kind of blue" so I figure I helped educate some CD thief at least.

If its not bolted down, its gone. If its bolted down, theres still some chance it will be gone. Also CHECK YOUR CAR VERY CAREFULLY for damage when it gets there. They wrecked the bumper on my civic with a forklift, but they paid the claim so no worries. Just don't drive away wihout checking everything.

Hey, you're stoked that you need to know about this!

Thats actually true, you have to drop it off with less than 1/4 tank of gas.
