One thing you need to factor in is off chance you get to the job and the boss is a D-bag. I left a job that I have been at for 15 years a while back for $25k more a year in the same city (jax). Seemed like a good deal.
Get to the new job after numerous meetings with the new boss, once at the job I realize he was just putting on a show to get me there. I get there and he is the biggest A-hole I've ever worked for in 35 years in the ad biz. (and I've worked with a few to know)
long story short, be very sure that the new job is a good culture move too. Don't just move for more money. You never know till you get there what the people are really like. And just because you make 30k more it won't matter if you only last 3 months.
I left that job as fast as a job opened back up at the previous job I had. Been back here for a year now and couldn't be happier again......but I lost all my 5 weeks vacation and put my family through hell working for a total toolbag.
just my .02 on moving just for money.

Something to think about, you could live on the North Jersey coast and take the ferry into work.

Wetsuits are really good now. Changing in and out seems to be the biggest issue. So just get a van to change inside of. Waves there are less often but often appear to be hollower and higher quality, so maybe you will enjoy each session more.

Surf less overall sessions, take more trips and have better sessions. I say go for it.

Since you currently walk to work. Will the 1 hour commute kill you?

coastal jersey is super pricey for the most part and the ferry is more than $600 a month, not counting the $120 metro card you need to get around Manhattan (unless your office is close to one of the ferry stops)

We thought about Jersey, but Long Beach is more consistent, and it's much easier to get to the East end when hurricane swells close out most of the eastern seaboard beach breaks. But also I'm baised. We have a handful of very dear friends in coastal Jersey (hi Groms Dad!!) but overall, we have way MORE friends on eastern long island, and go out there several times a year or more. Getting to the East End from Jersey is a 4 hour torture fest. From Long Beach it's 90 minutes, the first 30 of which are on the beautiful Ocean Parkway with bay to the left, and ocean to the right.

LIRR monthly pass to city is $300, unlimited.

all that said, i would LOVE to commute by high speed ferry. If they built a high speed terminal in Long Beach, i would pay it. My office is a 10 minute walk from the east side landing at 35th street

thats what Im seeing over here online.

I think people making the cost of living comparison tween NY/LA are thinking apartments in Manhattan which yea - obviously ridiculously expensive and small.

Right noiw - the only cost I see immediately added is commuting. I walk to work now so anything is going to be a jump up but cant be more than 50 bucks a week to take the train to and fro the city right?

I do have a lease and would be bringing my car - registration and insurance could be more $$ out there Im assuming?

Don't worry about the car if you have your heart set on Rockaway; New York doesn't require you to register it the day you show up and it will be in a chop shop in South Jamaica before you wake up the next morning.

That line you see on the houses that looks like the shitstain ring on toilet in a Wendy's bathroom is how high the storm surge from Sandy was.

You're in advertising in Jax? we may know a couple of people in common smile

And this is good advice.

I'm a big fan of making money and being a NY surfer, and frankly, I'm living my best life, and helping my wife find and live hers. But a bad work culture could change that formula dramatically.

I work in Trailer houses in LA - you can not get a more Toxic work environment than what Im currently used to.

this job would mean normal hours, and so far from whom ive met - normal people - and while less variety the content is top notch.

I moved up to LI from FL a bit over 2 yrs ago. The winters are for sure cold and it's hard to get motivated to surf when it's freezing out in the dead of winter. Some of the guys up here amaze me with the temps they surf in.
Def splurge on some good suits. Still not really used to gloves/hood but it's part of the deal.
Property taxes are insane here. Mine are literally 4 times what I paid down there.

I edit Movie Trailers for the most part. Alot of Netflix/Amazon, and HBO stuff too. While it sounds like fun, and it can be - its alot of stress, crazy deadlines, long hours, and the most random and eccentric people. I also work on a ton of stuff that never sees the light of the day because 5 places in town could be competing on the same trailer.

This is an opportunity to go in house at cable network and take on a creative director role. While Id still be cutting - Id be mentoring people on the team as well.
