Just got a pretty great job offer in NYC.

Coldest water Ive surfed in is probably Santa Barbara winters at the Queen in a 4/3 and booties. (i know not cold at all)

How fucked am I and whats the likelihood I remain a consistent surfer through the winters there?

With all the gear you see people rocking - are you still cold?

thanks - dudes mentioned everything but how cold it gets.

I actually grew up in Sheapshead Bay until the age of 11 so Im not unfamiliar with NY at all. Just the Ocean in the Winter.

You'll be fine. Just buy the high end wetsuit gear. And you won't be surfing all that often anyway, at least not by west coast standards.

You'll need a decent 5/4, at least 5mm lobster claw mitts and 7mm boots for the winter.

If you're coming from CA it'll definitely be a shock, even N. CA isn't really that cold. It's obviously less consistent.

But the surf does get good and easy access via train from NYC if you live in the city. However, I couldn't imagine doing the train in the winter without having a buddy with a place on the beach or at the very least a car. People do it, so maybe I'm just spoiled.

The flip side is NYC is a fun town and NY as a whole is a good place to be for most people, I don't live there and don't plan on it but many love it. If you don't want to live in the city, there's plenty of options to commute from. Lots of non surfing things to do; and if its a good job offer that allows travel you're in a very good central hub to fly out of with JFK and LGA close by.

Agreed. And living at the beach and commuting to work has treated me very well these 5 years now. That’s always an option too, especially for our fickle surf and cold winters

First. Be very aware of hypothermia. I surfed 7 winters straight and it was always on my mind. I was affected badly on several occasions and needed help to figure out how to simply get out of the water and go to my car. Scary feeling. The water definitely requires a 5/4 minimum. I prefer a 6/4 especially for windy sunless days and buy the best you can. I didn't opt for the higher end and have paid for it in weight, flexibility, and warmth. The extra rubber and gloves made me feel off balance as well. Also, keep in mind the extra rubber will render your normal board sort of useless. I had to get something with more float. Not trying to be negative, but I ended up calling it a day for the winter months. The wetsuit and the gloves are awful for me. I felt like I was surfing in a condom. Cloudy skies, 20mph offshores, 32 degree water, and very cold ride home don't help either. It's fun to say I have surfed a blizzard and many noreasters, but I can't say I have great memories of waves during those sessions. I know I got some, but I mainly remember feeling extremely uncomfortable. Go skiing/snowboarding instead.

Getting good waves in a blizzard is truly an amazing and unique experience.

Oddly enough those were my best winter waves ever and I wasn't cold at all. BTW. I feel like I bought a Chris Birch from a Manbearpig in LI many years ago.

Countless hours' worth of commuting, coupled with fickle cold waves... hope the job gives you a helluva lot of personal satisfaction!

Any pics of the Birch?

It's likely. I had a green twin and one of his little eggy quads, I think it was white with some nice pinlines?

You’ve lost your mind. Less than what it takes you to retire for life isn’t worth it.
