This is very sad. These bare sandstone cliffs from Carlsbad to La Jolla all have potential for this. Some less, some more. Signs all over telling people to stay back, but ignored as usual.

I've seen my share of cliff collapses at Blacks and Carlsbad since the 70's (some huge ones at Blacks) to seek my hang-out spot carefully, and never backing right up to the cliff side, if at all possible. Even at Blacks, there's only a couple spots I used to stash my stuff on the cliffs, before I decided to hang post surf. Usually that one spot where it's not vertical above and looks like a very old cliff collapse (large pile of crumbled dirt), so no section waiting to drop. Even then I'd stay out a ways from the cliffs.

What's really tragic, is that this bluff failure looks pretty small compared to most, and it still killed 3 people.

There's water tables that seep out of those cliffs all over Encinitas, and I would imagine after a wet winter, the seepage increases and weakens stretches that are already compromised due to lack of sand beach and high tides eating at the bases.

Be careful and conscious where you park it on the sand in those North County SD cliff areas. These cliff failures are like lightning strikes waiting to happen. Rare, but not uncommon.

Surf 'em if you got 'em

Crazy stuff. Still can’t believe it. Walk past the unstable cliff signs daily. Watch kids scurry up where they can, throw rocks, etc. kids stuff. One of those things you know can happen but never think will.

Thoughts for the families impacted.

That is where I learned to surf. It was called Tomato Patch way back then. No condos up there and used to have to use a rope to get down to the beach.

Part of the problem is growing that crap ground cover on the cliffs that isn't supposed to be there. It doesn't help, it makes it worse. When they water it from up above it just makes it heavy. Then when it gets super hot in the summer, the cliffs start cracking from the heavy weight from above. They need to get rid of all that useless ground cover.

So sad.

Three members of an Encinitas children’s dentist family celebrating his birthday or a family member’s successful battle with cancer at the beach. Just tragic...

Coincidence that a major hotel is under construction a couple of hundred yards away. That was no slide, a
solid block of sandstone just tipped over and flattened them. Just wrong.

I can confirm- long time locals and the family is dentists to a good swath of kids in the area. Everyone knows the bluffs “could” collapse but it’s sorta like being struck by lightning here. Such a tragic day.

Bock you

How awful! Who is it? I saw two women's names were identified. I grew up there in Leucadia, so I wonder if I know them.

My grand kid’s dentist. Not appropriate to name drop unless it’s made public.

noone...agree on the watering/development on the bluff...that combined with the erosion led to this tragedy...
