Not an effort at crowd control but there has been recent testing for toxic chemicals in the Tijuana River. Up until the last year so, testing was primarily for fecal coliform and total coliform. That may be the the least of the worries and risk.

Testing was in both wet and dry periods. There may be a year round risk with surfing IB.

If you dont have health insurance with no or low deductibles, you are going to pay dearly if you get sick.

There's 60,000 homeless people shitting in the streets in Los Angeles.

That's a small cities sewage output getting dumped in the ocean untreated.

No doubt there is a shitton of pollution there (my sinuses will always hate me) but that site is a bit full of shit.

I reference USEPA Regional Screening Levels (RSLs) a lot in my work and he is taking a lot of liberties there trying to compare to tapwater standards. This is for the non fecal coliform/entero compounds. You may get a yurkful out in the water but it's drinking a gallon a day for 30 years. Also, if they are talking dermal contact, while not good, pretty even with those respective RSLs.

But yeah that being said, I won't surf there either. Although I already am sterile so that's one less thing I'd have to worry about surfing there.

Do we really need pollution as a reason to not surf IB?

Kento you are right. Not an equal comparison with drinking water and contact with water. But, read all the findings and issues with coming in contact with that water. No bueno.

It must be so frustrating for the mayor of IB Serge Dedina. A lifelong resident, good surfer, and a leading voice in coastal conservation whos begging for federal intervention on both sides of the border unfortunately to no avail.

"Isn't stormwater treated before going into the ocean, like sewer water?

No! The storm drain system is separate from the sewage system. Storm drains are intended to take rainwater straight to the ocean to avoid area flooding. Storm drain water is not treated before flowing directly into rivers and the ocean, making it everyones responsibility to make sure storm drains and waterways are free of pollutants."

The city of Coronado has refused to join in the lawsuit against the IBWC. That has infuriated him.

Interestingly enough, ya know that bleach smell on the inside in IB and Baja Malibu?

I smelled the same exact thing at Lowers some weeks ago. Was not a constant smell and at first I thought it was my imagination.

So about an hour went by, and had forgotten about it, I took off on a right and bam! got a full whiff of it again.

Had there ever been a source determined for that bleach smell at the border?

My guess it's Punta Bandera outflow @ San Antonio drifting northward? being that you still get that smell when it hasn't rained in months.

Doesn't explain the smell @ Trestles though.

Stinky Hippie - The wine sipping, man-scaping, hair gel yuppie. AKA Gary from Rhode Island. Thanks for the PSA on Imperial Beach.

Those of us born in San Diego and who grew up in IB know the real story. Maquiladoras grew larger in the 1960's due to lax environmental laws, cheap labor and better tax incentives. Water was dirty long before Gary transferred to SDSU from Nantucket in the 90's.

People, best you can do for us is to publicize this crap (pun intended) and boycott any products produced along the border.

It's basically an ongoing, indisputable act of environmental terrorism against the US and it's citizens and no one holds Mexico accountable.

I would love to hear the untruths being peddled to constituents.

It's the same story in every coastal city, especially those like Miami Beach who allowed accelerated development without infrastructure and forethought.

What are the current stats on how much the sea level has risen in San Diego?

Are citizens being informed that apocalyptic claims about climate based sea level rise have been walked back?

The fact is "beach erosion" is 100% normal until humans come along and build houses.

This has nothing to do with climate change as politicians in areas with coastal real estate claim.

Big winter storm + king tide means you're going to get some flooding.

Big storms eat beaches.

The shoreline did not always look like you think it should.

Putting managed retreat in a coastal plan doesnt necessarily mean thats the direction things are going.

As a planner for 20 years, I've learned that just because its in a plan doesnt mean it will happen. And if its not in a plan, doesnt mean it won't.

Managed retreat would never hold up in court.

What I think you're thinking of here is in older places there are no separate sanitary and storm sewers, it is all one sewer, probably built before sewage treatment plants. In those cases the treatment plant treats both storm and sanitary which is fine when its not raining since its all sanitary then. Once the rain gets going and the co-mingled sewer exceeds the plants capacity the plant bypasses the overage.

I was at the Newtown Creek sewage treatment plant in Brooklyn doing some work. A guy there said they could treat 620,000 gallons a day but that when it rained they received 1,300,000. Surprised, I asked what they did with the overage. He pointed at Newtown creek and said the biologics could handle it as long as it didn't happen too often.

would it help if they built a 1,000' jetty where the border fence meets the ocean?

No, but it would help is the US ceeded the entire south side of the Tijuana River and the marsh back to Mexico, then build a fence/wall/jetty on that side.

Gary, based on your response... it's no wonder you are a well-paid government employee. English much?

But yes, I bet you get the hottest chicks and the best waves. You roll up to IB and everyone bows down to the heavy loc from New Hampshire. Yeah, you have ingratiated yourself with some of the locals down at "E" Street... good on ya. Haven't seen you in the water once.

But seriously folks, this was getting old in the 80's when I was in school. I had a high school friend get sick and die from the water and had another come down with Hep C.

fvckin' lame

Those of us born in San Diego and who grew up in IB know the real story. Maquiladoras grew larger in the 1960's due to lax environmental laws, cheap labor and better tax incentives. Water was dirty long before Gary transferred to SDSU from Nantucket in the 90's.

People, best you can do for us is to publicize this crap (pun intended) and boycott any products produced along the border.

This wine sipping manscaping yuppie transplant gets more better waves than you. Banged way more way hotter chicks than you too. 😄

Now beat it you has been.

Hep C is spread by blood. You're not gonna get it from the water, you're gonna get it from sharing needles or poor sexual choices.

Overseas I used a Thai prostitute's blood for my tattoo ink instead of regular ink, after we shared a vial of heroin and had 275 bpm traditional and anal sex for three hours. Am I fuct? shrug

That depends on how you define "traditional" and whether or not it was the prostitute pounding your pooper or you were pounding his/hers.

We need to know so we can do an accurate risk assessment.

Thanks you.

The prostitute wasn't doing the pounding, and disregard the "traditional" reference. Please risk-advise asap.

Thanks you.
