The city of Coronado has refused to join in the lawsuit against the IBWC. That has infuriated him.

No! The storm drain system is separate from the sewage system. Storm drains are intended to take rainwater straight to the ocean to avoid area flooding. Storm drain water is not treated before flowing directly into rivers and the ocean, making it everyones responsibility to make sure storm drains and waterways are free of pollutants."

Interestingly enough, ya know that bleach smell on the inside in IB and Baja Malibu?

I smelled the same exact thing at Lowers some weeks ago. Was not a constant smell and at first I thought it was my imagination.

So about an hour went by, and had forgotten about it, I took off on a right and bam! got a full whiff of it again.

Had there ever been a source determined for that bleach smell at the border?

My guess it's Punta Bandera outflow @ San Antonio drifting northward? being that you still get that smell when it hasn't rained in months.

Doesn't explain the smell @ Trestles though.

Stinky Hippie - The wine sipping, man-scaping, hair gel yuppie. AKA Gary from Rhode Island. Thanks for the PSA on Imperial Beach.

Those of us born in San Diego and who grew up in IB know the real story. Maquiladoras grew larger in the 1960's due to lax environmental laws, cheap labor and better tax incentives. Water was dirty long before Gary transferred to SDSU from Nantucket in the 90's.

People, best you can do for us is to publicize this crap (pun intended) and boycott any products produced along the border.

It's basically an ongoing, indisputable act of environmental terrorism against the US and it's citizens and no one holds Mexico accountable.

I would love to hear the untruths being peddled to constituents.

It's the same story in every coastal city, especially those like Miami Beach who allowed accelerated development without infrastructure and forethought.

What are the current stats on how much the sea level has risen in San Diego?

Are citizens being informed that apocalyptic claims about climate based sea level rise have been walked back?

The fact is "beach erosion" is 100% normal until humans come along and build houses.

This has nothing to do with climate change as politicians in areas with coastal real estate claim.

Big winter storm + king tide means you're going to get some flooding.

Big storms eat beaches.

The shoreline did not always look like you think it should.

Putting managed retreat in a coastal plan doesnt necessarily mean thats the direction things are going.

As a planner for 20 years, I've learned that just because its in a plan doesnt mean it will happen. And if its not in a plan, doesnt mean it won't.

Managed retreat would never hold up in court.

don't the storm drains get treated except for high-flow periods?

What I think you're thinking of here is in older places there are no separate sanitary and storm sewers, it is all one sewer, probably built before sewage treatment plants. In those cases the treatment plant treats both storm and sanitary which is fine when its not raining since its all sanitary then. Once the rain gets going and the co-mingled sewer exceeds the plants capacity the plant bypasses the overage.

I was at the Newtown Creek sewage treatment plant in Brooklyn doing some work. A guy there said they could treat 620,000 gallons a day but that when it rained they received 1,300,000. Surprised, I asked what they did with the overage. He pointed at Newtown creek and said the biologics could handle it as long as it didn't happen too often.
