Delta removes $150 fee for sporting equipment as checked baggage

Atlanta Airport Blog 20 hours ago
By Kelly Yamanouchi, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Delta Air Lines says it is eliminating its $150 fee to check golf clubs, surfboards, bicycles, scuba gear and other large sporting equipment, starting today.
Atlanta-based Delta’s decision follows a move in May by competitor American Airlines to eliminate oversize bag fees for a variety of sports and music equipment. And United Airlines last year eliminated its $150 or $200 service fees for checking a surfboard, wakeboard or paddleboard to and from California.Southwest Airlines, the second-largest carrier at Hartsfield-Jackson, already allows passengers to check golf bags, scuba equipment and small bicycle boxes as baggage without charging a special fee for sports equipment. Dallas-based Southwest allows passengers to check two bags for free. It charges a $75 fee each way for larger bicycle boxes, surfboards and some other equipment. Delta said its new policy eliminating its $150 fee for sporting equipment is effective for travel worldwide. But passengers traveling with sporting equipment will still need to pay any regular checked baggage fees. On domestic flights, Delta charges $30 for a first checked bag and $40 for a second checked bag. There are different rates for international flights --there may be higher fees for checked bags on some international routes, while on other international routes passengers can check one or two bags for free. There are still overweight bag fees on Delta for items that weigh more than 50 lbs, and in many cases the airline says it won’t accept items with length+width+height totaling more than 115 inches. Also, policies on Delta Connection regional flights may be different -- those flights are operated by regional partner airlines on smaller planes.

Flew Alaska a few weeks ago and boards were treated as regular luggage.

Get a grip.

Just hit their site and it is true and its two boards to a bag not over 50 pounds. Only bummer is there are no non-stop flights between me and Southern California. Their prices are a little on the high side too. Never flown Delta. Are their planes more comfortable than American? If so it still might be worth it.

Delta is one of the better domestic carriers. Certainly better than American and United. They don’t have much in the way of international flights within the Americas, unless you live near a hub.

I have avoided flying Delta specifically due to boardbag fees.

BTW, major dowsnide to this is boardbag fees can be a deterrent to surf travel.

So, expect more crowds.

For me Delta issues were the embargoes. They'd block anything oversize to San Salvador, Managua, basically all of Mexico that works out...all summer long, Memorial to Labor Day. Right when it's time to GTFO and go to these places.

When I saw Guad wasn't embargoe'd this summer I swooped. Beats the f--k out of driving to Orlando or Miami - the haul from South Florida is a long one, and having to re-check your baggage in the Orlando people mover...I sat there for 20-30 minutes waiting for my shit flying back from LA.

Delta Comfort+ is better and their first class is fine. Avianca's is as well. AeroMexico I've had the best luck with first class getting the boardbag fees waived. Much spottier on other airlines, although imho with what (some) surf trips cost, getting a priority tag on your board + all the other shit (departure lounge, comfy seats, service, early boarding = not worrying about being forced to check your one bookbag because some peasant had a rollerbag, bookbag, and plastic bag with food for their cheap ass) it sort of works out, especially the foreign carriers where you can lowball bid on empty first class seats and score.

Casa kind of has a point. I fly Delta to California, and it doesn't waste any work time - I can fly out after work and get back in the morning off the redeye.

Checked JAX-LAX and JAX-SFO for longs weekend in early December. Post-work departures from the East Coast and and pre-work arrivals on the redeye.

I need about tree fitty.

even if you have a longboard above the size limit, it's only like $50.

very reasonable.

Bump

Just got hit up in Jacksonville. $150. I got a receipt and they even gave me a special red card with a totally non-generic 1 800 number or some shit on it. The agent's dad surfs apparently, she said she told him to go to Nicaragua, and that she specifically looked up/entered surfboard in the computer. Other dude directing traffic at check-in had no idea about any policy change either.

Hopefully will be on time coming to/from Atlanta and will get to speak to someone in person there to recoup my scrilla.

Was it a domestic or international flight?

Free for bike boxes as well now! As noted above, 70lbs and some rather large linear dimension is the limit. Above those and you have to use their "cargo" division.

Cause it ain't no thing.

And if your boards break they're not paying for them.

The dumbest thing is to have to pay for boards and have no real recourse if they're mishandled.
That said, people who pack their boardbag with stuff other than surfboards are idiots and asking for problems.

Did you ask to speak to a supervisor and present this link?

Please report back. I would have been livid.
