Totally. They are great for farmers walks

Do you ever do unequal weight farmer's walks or always symmetrical?

I ALWAYS do farmer walks with a heavy dumb or kettle in one hand only.

Farmer walks with even weights on both sides are a fooking waste of time.

It’s one of those “look how much weight I can carry!!!!!” show boat nonsense.

No. I disagree.

When you carry that heavy load with both hands you are sending the message to your nervous system to adapt.

Not that a suit case carry isn't great too.

It's all good.

Most people don't do nothing.

You don’t have to do squats but split squats aren’t really a replacement

Maybe leg press even though there is a bro stigma about using machines

are u sure? if done properly u will feel the target in the glutes and hamstrings.

box squats are another alternative. i get funny looks from the idiots at the gym when i do them though lol.

leg press puts even more stress on the spine since the pelvis can tilt. horrible exercise

btw i was talking about bulgarian split squats:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C-uNgKwPLE

even that jacked due in the vid is shaky doing them. freaking hard exercise

Never tried unequal weight

I do suitcase carries once in a while with one hand though

This makes me realize I’ve been slacking on carries in general

Yeah, bodybuilding training is different from training for pure strength

I’m doing a bodybuilding cycle now (Vince Gironda 8x8) and you only lift less than 50% of your max

It’s still tough though, just not focused on pure strength

My dad used to say, “Don’t f with a 50 year old.”

Not sure how old you are

When my dad said it to me, he was 50.

I don’t “train” for strength.

Well in my case it be “don’t fook with an almost 49 year old.”

That's because guys with big showy muscles are bodybuilders, who mainly do high rep isolation movements with lower weights. That is what builds large muscles in places that are of minimal practical application, such as biceps and traps. The lower weight also keeps them on the weaker side, especially when it comes to having to use explosive strength.

Deadlifts, squats and other olympic lifts build more elongated, well-distributed muscle that is proportional in size to how we have evolved to be. The contribution of smaller muscles is more or less proportional to the contribution of the larger muscles. Whereas bodybuilders focus on the smaller muscles, and end of up looking dumb and out of proportion.

Most gyms I go to, the guys (and girls) heavy olympic lifts are often the leanest and don't look like lifters. While the bodybuilders look goofy and focus on shrugs and calf raises.

Serious strongmen and powerlifters are another animal. Those guys need to put on extra weight in order to gain the extra muscle required to deadlift stupid amounts of weight. Which often comes with additional fat tissue, which even then is used as a leverage advantage.

Really?! Seems like it makes a lot of sense. The weight distributed equally on both sides is far safer than a single side. Seems that it would burn our forearms and upper back muscles fairly well. Single or double side, it's probably one of the most applicable from a human evolutionary perspective, i.e. using branches to stabilize a large dead animal while carrying for long distances with a group of people.

Lije Rogan, you seem to know your stuff when it comes to MA and other forms of exercise, but your knowledge of weightlifting is fairly remedial. This is going off this thread and others.

Where’s Coat Hanger when we need him?

I had bad lower back and sciatic pain until I started squatting and deadlifting. I haven’t deadlifted in a while, but still squat 3x/week. I don’t really have any crazy strength goals, other than maintaining a minimum level of strength and trying to be able to squat 1.5x my body weight. I read that in some article and it stuck with me, also cause it seems like a reasonable goal.
