He's right.

Spine surgeon/gym rat told me the same thing - also about squats.

His words:

Both exercises are great for building strength.

Unfortunately the risk/reward is not worth it. At some point everyone breaks form and/or has a pre-existing misalignment issue that results in injury.

Most common exercise responsible for chronic low back pain and disc injury in males = deadlifts.
Squats with weight = compressing the spine (stupid) and presents high risk for stress fracture even with proper form.

All of the above is apparently validated by academic research.

Wow.

I would have thought this bit of erBB heresy would have garnered more action than this.

I love hang cleans.

I also dead lift in rack.

And a trap bar.

Yes, I thrashed my spine with years of reckless weight lifting.

But I had fvcking blast.

These are awesome

Probably all laid up with bad backs.

No.

You just don't want to go too heavy.

Try them. They are really easy on your spine. It's the only floor pull I can do now.

People work out too much in the sagittal plane.

Have your read the works of Stuart Mcgill?

What is safe for one person is not for another.

Bad technique and lifting too heavy is the culprit.

You're missing what I'm saying.

The exercises are great.

If you have perfect form, always.

A spine surgeon can tell you just how often "always" isn't.

The squats with weight are just bad in general for the spine, I think common sense regarding anatomy will tell you that, never mind the research into spinal stress fractures.

The exercise you posted above is a complicated high-risk movement.

Try it light weight.

Then get back to me.

It's amazing how much it spares the spine because you are not in sagittal plane.

Also, if you want to pack on muscle (which I don't), you need to go where there is potential risk.

What do you think are "safe" exercises that are effective for the lower body?.

Mike Boyle did a lot of single leg work for that reason.

i think the back squat is a dangerous one. been doing bulgarian split squats and step ups. the bss is a freaking leg burner. hard to do.

i do kettlebell deadlifts with lighter weights ~50-60 lbs. barbell deadlifts are quite technical and high risk if not done correctly.

at my age i'm training so my body doesnt fall apart not to get buff.

He was at one time. I know someone who used to workout with him. He used them early on and then abandoned them later. Or so he said. Maybe, maybe not. Even with the roids (assuming he is a vegetarian juicer) at 86 that is still impressive. Genetics matter no doubt. And it's not something I want to emulate, but it does give one pause and consider what is possible if one does not just roll over and give up. Years back I ran into a martial artist in his 70's that could still move well. That's what I want. Screw the looks, I want the movement.
