Askren gave a pretty respectable and entertaining post fight thingy. Mostly no dull spots in 27 minutes

Props to Ben Askren for talking to Arian Helwani on his show the day after his first KO loss. Not an easy thing to do (took Rhonda Rousey about a year to talk about her first KO loss to Holly Holm). He will be back and if he can avoid future flying knees and get guys to the ground, he will most likely keep winning.

Is there is there a good defense for that flying knee kick?

I would think avoiding it would be good.

It seems like BA did the exact wrong thing.

It was a tactical error.

You know, I banged my knee the other day cleaning up the garage from the construction project ending. Hopped around and held my knee and tried not to wimper too much...it was like I caught the edge of the kneecap and the femur head just perfectly to induce the most pain possible while you try not to just sit on the floor massaging it and keeping tears at bay. Kinda like just striking the funny bone on a butcher's block at your friend's fancy remodeled kitchen while holding the Manhattan....you don't want to spill the drink, you don't want shout out 'Motherfu*ker, that hurts!" while your friend laughs, but you want to acknowledge that it is more than just a tingle in the elbow.

So yeah, I see these flying knee strikes to the head, a pretty hard mass of bones known to break fingers and wrists, and I think, "Man, that was a great move, but doesn't it hurt the knee?"

Oh, the S. Segal gif is great. Shows a great simple move and sort of negates itself at the same time because of, well, Segal.

No. It doesn’t hurt the knee (that much). You’re really actually connecting with the bottom of the femur, above the knee.

As for Segal and aikido in general...it’s a bunch of useless (for fighting) bullshit...

Although, that video is mislabeled. The bald guy isn’t really doing BJJ.

I wonder if part of the success of that move is that it's a surprise?

Yeah, it looks more like, Akido vs MMA?

The Akido guy looks like he could be beaten by a lot of systems.

A good street fighter just needs to punch him in face.

Aikido people are delusional. It’s kind of sad.

The best defense for a flying knee is getting out of the fvcking way. Don't be there.

Aikido is not very functional with anyone who isn't a complete duck. However, I worked a bar with a guy once who had had some Aikido training. For getting drunk ducks out the door with no damage, some of the standing arm/wrist/finger locks/cranks were pretty useful. And they fall well. Which is Judo/BJJ day one training. He was useless in a real fight with anyone who was even moderately dangerous. And some of them are good with a jo staff. So beware the stick.

Anyone can handle a drunk.

As far as weapons, bjj is good for one on one no weapon fighting. That’s about it.
