Anybody have suggestions where we can stealth camp in San Francisco? We’d be in a VW Vanagon and woul have to pop the top.

Throw a contractor logo on your vehicle and you could probably bluff Doof into thinking you are there to help with his project

Or go feral along with the loads of other folks doing that. Will you be planing on using the sidewalk as a toilet, per the standard approach here shrug

Does it have to be in SF or can it be SF adjacent?

We’ll poop art the art museum or McDonald’s. Kind of want to be central, show my daughter some sights before heading up to Mendocino humboldt.

There's a lot of stealth camping in SF. Just wear dirty clothes, shit on the street, and act crazy and you'll be all good

If you stealth camp on the street, park near a drain.

Cannot advise stealth camping in GG Park, McClaren Park, Presideo, or at Twin Peaks. Also advise against parking near a bar or pathway home from a bar or in areas frequented by other urban campers.

Don't think popping the top on a van will make you stealthy except to newborns.....everyone in SF knows what a VW van with a poptop is doing...you just gotta find the right place where people don't care enough to hassle you.

Oh, and wherever you do park, check the street signs for towing/parking restrictions. Nothing worse than fending off drunks from the lesbian bar at closing time only to be awaken by the tow truck at 6 AM (or hearing the boot get clamped on). Oh, don't park on the street which has the garbage cans out...those garbage trucks aren't quiet.

So to recap:

1 No parking in parks or at tourist spots
2 Park near a drain
3 Read the parking restriction signs
4 Be wary of high foot traffic areas and other urban campers

But actual advice where to camp your van?

See if you can find a spot on Lake Street near Mountain Lake. Good neighborhood, not far from food on Clement, and Hwy 1.

There seems to be a few vans/campers at the end of Sloat, between the Zoo and the beach. Just be careful to not get stuck in the sand there. Plenty of room there if you drive around the city and head there to sleep before heading out of town. Minimal lights but hope you have curtains on the van. Could wake up and walk to Java Beach Cafe for breakfast and a coffee.

Also...and I can't believe I'm saying this because its my buildings overflow parking lot...but you can also park in the Wise Surfshop parking lot overnight and not be bothered if you don't act all crazy. Pretty good amount of lights so close the curtains. The other side of the building there is a Safeway market, plus a cafe around the corner on La Playa (or more options just up Balboa 10 or so blocks near the Balboa theater).

Don't pop the top at either spot, but wake up for a quick surf!

They just banned e-cigarettes so whatever you do, don't vape while you're shitting on the sidewalk or cooking up a fix.

You have to be swank around them thar big city sophisticates!

Pretty hard to be stealthy in a city if you have to pop the top or with more than one person.

You’d probably have better luck outside the city for the night.

They are everywhere. If you go stealth you will be the only one.

Popping the top is announcing you're camping. Maybe someone would be willing to airb&b their driveway on craiglist for a night. shrug I usually crash in the big industrial parking lots outside of town, or a safe-ish looking neighborhood in town and leave before sunrise, but no top popped.

If you can even find a parking place you'll be lucky.

Just get into an overnight paid parking lot downtown and spend the night there. We stayed safe and sound in a Sportsmobile one night down in the Tenderloin. The people at the lot were fine with it. We just asked them ahead of time and told 'em we wouldn't dump anything out of the van. Was a way better option than parking on the street or some sketchy spot under a freeway. Might also check hipcamp.

There's also an app/website called pavemint - like an airbnb for parking spaces.

I’ve van camped in South Park before. It’s mostly office space, if you show up late there shouldn’t be an issue. Pretty quiet too, it’s enclosed and surrounded by buildings so less traffic noise. Just read the regulations for street sweeping and such.

No.

They reason for the ban is the usual 'doing it for the kids' argument.

Apparently vaping is more appealing than smoking to tender throats and lungs, and, well, what kid doesn't like pulling the wool over adults' eye that vaping allows...mmmm, I'm being a surreptitious rebel.

PS
Advise against a high profile spot where GG Bridge people will roust you.

PS
The industrial parking spots are not as quiet as one might imagine. Might be calm-ish during the day, but night is another story. Hard to sleep well camping next to to the meth van but if the guy in the murder van gets to those van-lifers first and is satisfied for the night, you are probably ok. Enjoy the bay view in the morning and at sunset, you can see the projects on the hill where OJ grew up.

^^ That area looks waaaay too sketchy I wouldn't sleep in my car there. I've parked in big industrial parking lots for tech companies and large hotel lots on my way into the city (Daly City or Palo?). The main issue I've had is the 3-4am street cleaner that seems to beep constantly regardless if it's going in forward and reverse (plus the sound of of the sweeper doing it's thing), and park away from dumpsters in case the trash trucks stop by. Wake at 5am and I'm in or through the city and across the bridge before major traffic (usually).

My advice? Don't stay in SF. Park somewhere else overnight and drive in for city stuff.

Campsites are hard to come by on short notice, but there are plenty of places to park north of the bridge that are way mellower than SF.

Been long while but I believe 82 between 101 and halfmoon bay is a good one with man made lake in middle of drive.

I am sure the people in the white murder van are nicer than the people in the two tone meth minivan.

Anyway, the park there is a good place to collect poisonous shellfish during low tide.

Isn't there a wall mart south of the city?

Walmart or 24 hour fitness parking lots are always safe bets in a pinch.

I've been banned from better websites than this one.

Closest Walmarts are in San Leandro or Moutain View.

Is that how you are doing it when you are here?

You can park in my driveway if you are ever in O'side.

while we have not met IRL, the good karma of your posts
over the years shows your most excellent nature.

you can camp, park at my house or driveway.
very quiet and very safe street w/ no traffic.

not in SF, but < 25 mins to SF, can get on
the freeway to SF in <3mins.

once we meet IRL, you can probably just
stay in my guest room and of course use
my bathroom and kitchen. ;-)

if interested, please PM me your phone # so we can discuss
your date(s) and send you my address.

basically same offer here, minus the guest room on account of I don't have one. Do have a deck though. We're north of SF, so maybe on your way to/from mendo?

That touches my heart when the erbb offers up their driveways to strangers.

A threat response is a potent trigger for motivated reasoning.

ok

in the spirit of full disclosure, I don't have a driveway. It's more of a semi level pullout sort of situation.

Thanks for shaming me with your driveway privilege cussing

It's not my driveway. It's where I rent. And it's O'side.

So don't worry.

You are still above in the offering shelter to strangers hierarchy.

We're like muslins.

I am sure the people in the white murder van are nicer than the people in the two tone meth minivan.

Anyway, the park there is a good place to collect poisonous shellfish during low tide.

It's already good tomorrow...

Is that how you are doing it when you are here?

You can park in my driveway if you are ever in O'side.

Mahalo for the offer but my van adventure is over, back home now and when I come back it'll be with the family for a short burst...

I never did the parking lot thing, I slept in very nice neighborhoods and had a very specific game plan with some rules, so here's a Mr. Doof style list:

1. Never park in the same place two night in a row. I had 5-7 good spots, close to work or close to spots I like to surf. Rotate them. Five nights minimum between stays.

2. Never get out of the van. Arrive late, after 9pm, having already done all my bedtime stuff at a park or at work. Jump into the back, pull the shades, set the alarm for 5:30, crash. Then up before the sun and head out before anyone even knows I'm there.

3. Never park within sight of someone's window or front door. This can be tough in a city, hence the importance of picking your spots and knowing them well.

Follow these rules and you are being respectful to homeowners and neighborhoods and minimizing getting "the knock." I never had the knock, not once, and a few times I woke up with parking tickets, meaning the cops ticketed my van with me crashed inside and never even knew I was there.

It's easy and safe if you're respectful. I met a few local residents of neighborhoods I crashed in at coffee shops who recognized my van, and was always honest about my trip. They were cool and some even offered to let me post up in their driveways. Never took them up on it, that seemed really weird to me, actually.

I got a lucky bounce off that mound mid-fairway on the opening tee and laid

never hit such a good (lucky) tee shot in my life.

I love that little back loop across the street!

if you haven't smoked DMT you have no credibility on any subject in surfing or outside of surfing...

The days of Yore.

Stealth camping/ Stealth 4X4. Just to the south of Sharps Park. In between SP and Rockaway. The headland.

Back in the early 80's we used to drive out there in my buddy's 4X4 Chevy Luv. It is still undeveloped. One of those rare places.
