Hey all,

Looking for some input on a new board. I have a 5’6 pod mod that has been a magic board for me. I was going to pick up another stock pod mod but figured maybe I’ll order something to give it just a hair more range. I surf a lot but as I get older i have definitely starting to notice my paddle shape isn’t good until the season gets in full swing. Also in smaller waves I’m a little slower to the feet. That’s why I’m considering one of these models almost as my ‘shortboard’, the pod mod has surprisingly surfed well in larger waves than I expected it to. Surf mostly rincon other than in summer when we are pushed further if you live in SB. Was thinking maybe an original pod or a slightly longer slimmer pod mod to help it work a touch better in good waves as well. I haven’t felt an original pod in a super long time, any thoughts on the rocker compared to a pod mod? Anyone have a round tail in these models or ideas on that?

Thanks for any input!
Ben

Pod Mod more forgiving, slightly fishy with a bigger sweet spot. PM = grovel board that can both perform and go in mush. Round-tail Pod is more performance and less forgiving. Back foot has to be back. More of an all-arounder that needs curve in the wave.

Good buddy of mine still rides Pods (special order) and drives off his rail and can chuck airs.

2 cents spent, hope that helps. Also saw a round-tail Pod Mod at HSS a few weeks ago. Interesting…

The OG pod has a pretty deep single concave to ever so slight vee off the back fin

Given that you like the neutral contours of the pod mod ( flat to vee) a better step up in perfomance would be the M18
I have a 6-2 and its a good time

I have 2 OG pods, 1 stock from when they first came out and a brand new custom.

Both have single to double to vee. Pretty deep double.

To the OP...wanna buy a 5’8 pod?

I live in SB.

Btw, the original pod is hands down my all time favorite board for 80% of the surf we get around here.

That’s what I’ve heard from a few people and kind of the goal with this board. Something short enough to throw in the cab of my work truck if I need and something I feel ok I bringing daily. I have a really nice rounded pin step up for the other days.

I may message you Duffy about the board, I usually use gift cards from selling used boards at the shop to not have to explain to the wife why I need another board!

Thanks for all the replies!

pod mod is too chunky feeling. ci should really just re-release the pod unchanged. may have to place an order for one.

5’8 x 20 x 2 3/8 for both.

The custom has ever so slightly pinched rails.

If the m18 is the old CI I’m thinking of, its kind of a stretched out pod? I think my old one was ~ 6’4 x 19.25 or so, IIRC. Very forgiving board. Got passed around my friends and left in various parents garages.

FWIW a buddy of mine claims to have gotten the wave of his life on it in NLA during a swell from the most recent El Niño. It was the apparently the most capable looking in the old stash.

The one I’m thinking of had a swallow tail but similar-ish outline.

A “stretched out” Pod is...

...not a Pod.

right on. i may be ordering one as a daily driver for north oc.

on another note, in the early 90's i owned an early version of the pod called the m13 that machado was riding back then in tiny dims. mine was a 5'8. very similar to the pod. almost like they tweaked the m13 into a pod for dane. funny how the m13 then became a giant funboard lolz. maybe scott ando can chime in on the pod design.

Guys are ordering M13 guns now. I’ve fondled a few of them and there are a couple on the rack at the shop and they look great. Sort of similar to the Padillac.
