Hate speech has been normalized on the internet where there are little repercussions for our words. IMHO we have failed this grand experiment. I don't necessarily believe in censorship but I do believe that we've come to a turning point where we need to take stock in what this internet anonymity is doing to us as a society. Both here in the states and globally.

The 1st amendment does nothing in terms of anonymity protections and speech.

Not so fast, dumbass!!

https://www.eff.org/issues/anonymity

The Supreme Court has ruled repeatedly that the right to anonymous free speech is protected by the First Amendment. A frequently cited 1995 Supreme Court ruling in McIntyre v. Ohio Elections Commission reads:

Anonymity is a shield from the tyranny of the majority. . . . It thus exemplifies the purpose behind the Bill of Rights and of the First Amendment in particular: to protect unpopular individuals from retaliation . . . at the hand of an intolerant society.

It's pretty comical that all the usual hate spewers are the only ones who don't like their identity revealed.

This way they can do stuff they can't do in real life.

Pretty sure the 1st amendment makes no mention of the internet and being that it's not a closed internet and it expands well beyond the United States of America does the constitution apply? I'm not saying we should curb what we say, I'm saying perhaps we should take more responsibility for the things we say and perhaps that would happen if we weren't hiding behind anonymous internet handles and screen names and our real names and identities were linked to the things we say.

oh this is like the 2nd amendment argument! Like our forefathers only thought of muskets.... and now our 1st amendment should only apply to people actually standing on a box in the middle of town square.

give me a break

maybe we need the little blue checkmark on the erBB like twitter?

at the end of the day - you really shouldnt be triggered by what someone on twitter, forums, talk shows, etc - say. if that affects you and your mojo, maybe its time to walk away for a bit
