Jake Phelps was 100% skateboarder, but that label sells him way too short, because beyond his enormous influence in our world, he was truly an individual beyond this world. When loved ones pass we sometimes mythologize about their full lives rich in friendships and experiences. Sometimes we need to talk ourselves into believing it all. It makes us feel better, and helps us cope with the loss. Well, in the case of Jake, the task becomes wrapping your head around just how many lives one person could possibly live. He really did see it all, do it all, and that incredible brain of his could relish every last detail. But most of you reading this now identified primarily with Jake Phelps the skateboarder, and editor of our magazine, so I will leave you with this truth - I never met anybody who loves anything more than Jake worshipped skateboarding. Just as we need food and water to survive, Jake needed skateboarding to keep his blood pumping. It was more than a hobby or form of transportation or way of life - it was his oxygen. Heres another thing. Jake never bailed. Jake fooking slammed. And there is a big difference. He only knew commitment. He was going to go for it without hesitation, and there were only two outcomes. Either youd see his triumphant fist pumping in the air or itd be an earth-shaking collision with the concrete. I remember him telling me once that he never fell backwards, he always fell forward. Leaning back meant there was hesitation, and Jake was all the way IN. There was no myth. The man was the myth. We love you, Jake. -Tony Vitello

never met the guy but who could forget looking at thrasher magazine as a little kid.

r.i.p.

i should go roll around the local park in tribute. after the last year of karate and its related injuries, skating doesn't seem so dangerous anymore.

Whoa!

Damn, not sure what to say.

Thrasher is inextricably linked with Phelps. And Thrasher is a huge part of skateboarding.

Wow.

Q: Secret aspiration?

There is something admirable about anyone who is still riding a skateboard into their late 50s. He did not sit well with a lot of people but man what an icon for youthfulness.

For some reason I can't imagine a guy like him dying.

This was a photo from 2010 when I was the marketing director at Circa Footwear. It was at the King of the Road " End of the Line" party at The Palms in Vegas. Thats me with the camera and Phelper in the hat talking to P-Stone who passed away last year, as Koston arm wrestled that huge dude.
Anyway, as the night further along and Phelps was about to announce the final two teams, he named us second behind Koston and Nike. My TM walked up to get our part of the cash prize and just as Phelps was going to hand it over, he threw the cash into the air... $5000 grand in hundreds. Later at the downstairs bar, our TM said they only found $3900. The rest of the night we watched Phelps pull crisp hundred dollar bills out of his pocket all night buying people drinks.

He was an asshole, but he was our asshole.

RIP Phelper.

surf and enjoy

I used to run an old surfshop in Doggie~Town,
ya know, Santa Monica, and I'm from Venice, from back in thee day.
Never heard of your boy, but I guess he had an effect on some of you boyz...

I surf. Side~walk skate.
Never heard of Jake.

BUT the recent death of Harold Walker,
should've been bigger news in the surf scene than the death of JMV, of Luke Perry, or this dude whom you now mourn. How you boyz did not post a tribute thread on Harold Walker escapes me...

Who is Harold Walker???

Just 1 of THEE DUDES who made surfboard blanks!!!

Quote:
Harold Walker of Walker foam was an important and insightful interview for our film.
Everyone in the Surf Industry chose a side. Clark Foam or Walker Foam. It was interesting to hear Harolds take on the past. Harold Walker was a legend in the industry and for a time he was one of two men whos blanks supported the rise of the surf industry.

RIP Harold Walker.

So enjoy your ridez while ya can boyz!!! And support your local shaper, your local surfshop.

I like the gloves. They are needed in the aquatic deeds of perversion that he partakes in.

Didn't Bonzer on here say that Phelps was longtime heroin user?

I grew up with Harold's son, but only meet Harold twice. There's not many left of that generation, and it's great some are taking the time to document their lives and history of surfboard evolution.

RIP Jake

No full confirmation but that's what I'm hearing.
