I was on CI MBMs for the most part. XTR has been my thing since Clark Foam went under over a decade ago. I usually rode around 6'1" to 6'3" in my good wave board DD and about 18-3/4" wide. I think my Flyers were around 6'0" and 19" wide.

I did ride my CI step up last time I was on Maui, but the next day took out my V-4 and enjoyed it more. It may be age, but the volume on the Tomo boards is significantly more than you'd expect for a shape that size. I can paddle them better than many other boards. I have gone up around 1/2 liter to 1 liter in the last 5 years, though.

The main thrust of my rambling trope above is that the tail of the boards made all the difference. I know the Slater Design Cymatic and SciFi are very similar to the Psyko (I think the SciFi is the same... isn't it?) but the difference in feel during maneuvers surprised me. I thought they'd be pretty similar, and to find they just weren't was a shock. That Psyko is a great board but I can see it being used for up and down lip hits versus the more horizontal approach I've become accustomed to with the V4.

From what I can tell, Tomo's boards can now be grouped into those pre-Evo and those post-Evo. His rail lines were straighter and more parallel pre-Evo, which is what works for me. I like the speed. : )

What does 'milkier' mean?
Gotta say, I'm falling out of love pretty quickly with the Evo. I only seem to enjoy it when the waves are clean... otherwise it feels pretty average.

that's funny, I almost feel the opposite. I like it better when it's softer or not as clean and I need the board to generate more speed. But when it gets chest high and/or cleaner, I'd rather ride other designs- including Cymatic which feels much more precise and HP.

I fall back in love with the Vader and the Evo all the time. I feel like those two designs are sort of linked in a way anyways. I think the Evo is a wider, rounder and sort of softer "evolution" of the Vader.
I think the Evo is a great grovel board or cruiser board for any condition. Although, I've had the Evo out when its HH+ and racey and it started to feel really skatey and I didnt like it too much. Also, if its a really steep barreling wave I think the rails are kind of boxy and too full (at least on the stock FW builds). But other than that, its a great board for everything else (IMO).

This is good stuff ShShSh.

I never knew the Psyko and the V4 had the same rocker. I never liked the V4 ( I had a 5'6 for a while), but I love my Psyko ( owned one for 5 years now).

I agree that the Pysko performs best in a punchy barreling beachbreak. I've also had some insane days on it at down-the-line style point and reef breaks too. In those scenarios, I switch the fins out to a rakier set and am able to draw my turns out better.

Yes, the psyko can sink the tail easier so you can get that bite (even at speed) in order to pivot on a dime. I love this aspect of the board since you have all the control you could possibly want.

Right there with you about the Evo Oeste. I feel like it planes and cruises well on a semi-soft to shapely wave. Once the wave has some shape or power, there's a lot of other boards I'd rather ride. It feels like rocker is a little too flat and the rails too round for the snappy gouging I want to do. I mean, you can do it but it doesn't feel like that's what the Evo was made for.

OMG no doubt. It really gets on top of the water and at speed setting a rail can be uber challenging. I slammed recently tryin to ride it on a OH to DOH day and got punished. Now I know its limits though rolleyes

The Hydroshort looks like it's Burford EPS blank with carbon strips? Boards are priced at the sharp end of the stick!

It's likely only reflective of my shit surfing, but I tend to bog the rail more so than usual when the conditions are messier and I'm riding the Evo. It excels in 'lumpy' windswell conditions for sure, which I don't define as messy. When I say messy, I'm talking about onshore wind affected conditions, foam on the face, sand being churned up etc.
