That's the new norm. Surf (and skate) vids used to save all of the good clips for the actual film, now everything needs to be released ASAP for our INSTAgratification. Completely defeats the purpose of the actual film.

They screened it at surf expo. The top 3 or 4 got out on podcasts. They probably had to release the winner just to stay ahead of it.

The concept is stupid as deviations from standard Poly/Pu doesn't apply to most surfers except Firewire fanbois.

100 percent. As I've also said before I also thing the shapers should know who the surfer is. Jordy, Mick, Julian, Dane all surf differently and I would assume they'd all make tweaks to suit the individual.

Makes no sense to me.

I like the idea of the surfer being anonymous, they must give the shaper's the height and weight though.

Either way it's a loss.

Let's say they knew who the surfer was. If it's a top guy chances are they've seen his go-to equipment and you're going to get a lot of very similar boards.

Perhaps if they had the shaper designing the board for a particular wave with that surfer in mind it would work

I like that the shaper doesn't know who the surfer is (even though in the past it was pretty easy to guess... not many 200lbs pros about).

Stab was a bunch of dorks for the spoiler, and if I had any self control, I'd boycott watching the whole thing.

They totally sh1t the bed on this one. Movies come out all over the world and their makers don't scream spoilers across the interwebs just out to beat others to the punch. I mean, I'm sure most of us will check it but it sure won't be as much fun.

If they didn't string vid along with so many ads and sneak peaks I don't think it would be as bad. Buzzkill fer sure.

They mentioned this in one of the previous STID's. Their reasoning was that some of the shapers may have worked with the surfer before and have a advantage having already refined what that pro liked from a general file.

Not sure how I feel about epoxy only. In one sense its cool to get a pro to compare all the new builds rather than just hearing from the builder about how theirs is best. On the other I feel like someone like Mick especially will always go for poly as it probably suits his on rail approach a bit more. I could see epoxy being better for a more trick oriented air guy like Italo.

I think they named the winner ahead of time because they knew once they premier it word would spread quickly anyway.

I think it would be cool to do one for stub shortboards in sub par waves next year. Footage may not be as watchable but feedback on boards would more valuable than HPSB's for most viewers surfing shit waves most of the time.

They could have chosen to publish the video at the same time as the premier, or just after. They could have done so many things to warn someone they're about to reveal the winner, but nah, they were a bunch of dickheads.

Even on Facebook you could avoid the spoiler, by not clicking o the link, and the title image to the article didn't make it obvious.... but, on Instagram they prefix the text with 'Spoiler', right underneath the pic of Mick with a pic of grinning f*cking Britt, celebrating.

This was a bit of media I was really looking forward to ... not that it has any relevance to my surfing, I just find it entertaining and they took most of the joy out of it. Dicks.

I agree. It was a stupid choice.

I'll still watch it though.
