So I'm selling my wife to pay for a trip to Tavarua. she's in her 40's, still a babe, and currently training for her yoga and pilates instruction certs. Handy in a pinch when you can't get a slot at your local studio

laugh but seriously. I'm about to book a week in late May on that fabled island. I've told her all about it and she is on board with the whole Fiji thing, the small private island resort experience, i assured her that the island has basically every tropical island activity you could ever want, even for non surfers.

There is no REAL dilemma here. She's not going to say no to it, and obviously i can (and would) just go myself with zero guilt. But for any of you guys that have been, can you feed me a few nuggets or anecdotes of positive experiences for non-surfing spouses? so I can really sell her on the idea? Becasue i also was realsitic with her that yes, i will be surfing for 4-8 hours a day, sometimes at an offshore reef that requires a boat ride to and fro. And I want her to really be excited, and not just "going on another surf trip somewhere beautiful with her husband"

And she actually HAS done plenty of surfing, but still very much a total beginner. From what i gather Tavarua has little inside-the-reef beginner friendly zones? And would it be likely that even with the limited amount of guests on-island at any given point, there will probably be other non surfing spouses to hang with, go snorkeling, do yoga, etc? Or will she literally just have to entertain herself for hours on end whilst I'm out surfing?

Talk about luxury problems. But it's my 40th birthday that month (and also our anniversary and HER birthday in the same month) and dammit, i want to go to Tavarua. And I would love to tell her that the erBB's collective experience declares that she will enjoy her week there as much as I will.

I've not been to Tavi but Namotu lefts is a pretty forgiving - and fun as hell wave. I'd try to set up a sesh or two out there with the wife. I think you can surf out there now that the whole place is basically opened up for surfing by the Fijian gov't. Swimming pools at Namotu is a good right and surely easier than Restaurants, but it can still be pretty fast and steep. Still, if she's a regular foot it's super fun on a log.

while you are off surfing the boatmen who have the day off will keep her entertained!
when we went, i was on the boat every morning at the crack of dawn and back by the time the wife and kids were eating breakfast, then all sorts of fun things to do, snorkle, fish, paddle board around the island, push the wife into waves at kiddy land, run out to the sand bar for a picnic, run across to namotu, rent a helicopter for an hour and tour the islands (baller like you should do this), hang out with the Fijian people and realize they are the kindest people you may ever meet, eat like a champ Xno drinks for you , drink kava on Fiji night (don't forget to bring a bunch of Kava leaves for the chief) and then hang out with the fijians playing guitar, singing, and drinking more kava behind the restaurant until late into the evening. play ping pong for high stakes, get a massage, walk around the island, try to become friends with Roseman, get barreled, get worked, meet the doctor and get your feet put back together, get tricked by the staff with all sorts of pranks, go up on the observation deck in the middle of the night and ___ you know.. watch sea turtles lay eggs, watch the male staff freak out when a huge sea snake comes up on the deck and then one of the ladies comes and grabs it and throws it back out to sea, have a friend propose to his wife and then get married by a neighboring islands chief/ priest two days later and all the women sing the most beautiful songs you've ever heard, party party party, surf surf surf and then be sad when the last day comes and realize you may never be back there again....
p.s. if you need a guide i'm available...

Weve had several friends/families go recently. The wives were not surfers and have all raved about it about it. My wife is now sold on the idea. We are going for my 50th in 2020.

Youre wife will love it.

I'm curious on price too! 10 year anniversary coming in 2021 and this sounds like a great way to celebrate! She surfs but not a hard charger.

2019 rate: $4,000 per person for the week. Literally includes everything except airfare, booze, and tip(s)

Airfare from JFK- $1250 R/T per person. business class is a whopping $6K each. even i don't roll that hard. I'll spring for the extra legroom seats though lol

So that aint cheap, but talk about trip of a lifetime. And I inked a deal last night around 5:25 PM that will pay for the entire thing, so it's time to carpe the diem

Stocked I turn 50 in 2020 as well but need to hit lottery for this trip. I was thinking Northshore trip staying at Sunset since I have never been in dead of winter with swell drowning

Stocked! My wife and I have a trip booked to Namotu in September. We've been to Fiji once before, but we were on the main island and there wasn't a lot of surfing/beach activities involved. More lounging by the pool and going into town type stuff.

Looking forward to hearing what you thought.

I'll take her. I need a new one, anyway. I know she'll spend all of your loot on me, so it's all good. Have her call me for a test drive.

So, another thing to consider- in peak season (March to October) the rate is per person, regardless of surfing abilities or participation. However, in the off season, they do a couples rate of only $5,000 for the couple, obviously a significant savings of $3,000

But, is the risk of off season flatness really worth saving a few grand? I had a monster year, money is not really much of an object. I'm not such a high roller that i would NOT notice $3K, but it's not going to put my mortgage payments in jeopardy either. and there is the whole "Birthday/Anniversary/Birthday" aspect to a May trip. And also, if I'm only going to Tavarua once (for now anyway) shouldn't i just nut up and pay full freight to be there in peak season with the best chance of epic perfection some or all of the trip?

I mean, I probably just answered my own question. But somebody did just ask about "non surfing spouse" pricing, so i figured it was useful info irregardless.

We took our honeymoon on Namotu. Went over to Tavarua for an afternoon. She won't be bored, there is plenty to do. Scuba diving, quick trip to neighboring islands, SUP and snorkeling... a week will go by really fast. Plenty of wife-friendly waves around too, if she wants to surf.

We went around Thanksgiving and there was still HH to overhead surf most days at certain spots.

Book it already!

She can go fish and on the way back have her tell the guy to swing by Cloudbreak so she can watch you surf or even film.

No ones mentioned tennis yet laugh Theres a tennis court there.

Also you can go to neighboring islands and check out the community.

Hammocks and cool wood beach chairs everywhere to read, draw, etc.

Dont talk up Nadi, where the airport is too much. Stay at a Deneru hotel, especially you two being New Yorkers.

The botanical garden north of Nadi is bitchin though.

One thing I missed was doing the river raft expedition on Nadi. If you have time Do It. I hear it is amazing.

Be prepared for a big bar bill, drinks arnt cheap.

Also bring plenty of cash to tip the boatmen at the end of your stay.

There is no better trip. Your wife will love it and make you go back. My wife and I went for our 10 year anniversary. She is begging me to go back. She loved it. She surfs a little. Our friends went with us and neither surf and said it was the best vacation ever.

And heck I may as well tack on 3 extra nights after our 7 days on Tavarua to explore and hang out on the main island. That will be memeoral day weekend. 12 day vacation for only 7 vacation days. May 18-29. No brainer.

when we went, i was on the boat every morning at the crack of dawn and back by the time the wife and kids were eating breakfast, then all sorts of fun things to do, snorkle, fish, paddle board around the island, push the wife into waves at kiddy land, run out to the sand bar for a picnic, run across to namotu, rent a helicopter for an hour and tour the islands (baller like you should do this), hang out with the Fijian people and realize they are the kindest people you may ever meet, eat like a champ Xno drinks for you , drink kava on Fiji night (don't forget to bring a bunch of Kava leaves for the chief) and then hang out with the fijians playing guitar, singing, and drinking more kava behind the restaurant until late into the evening. play ping pong for high stakes, get a massage, walk around the island, try to become friends with Roseman, get barreled, get worked, meet the doctor and get your feet put back together, get tricked by the staff with all sorts of pranks, go up on the observation deck in the middle of the night and ___ you know.. watch sea turtles lay eggs, watch the male staff freak out when a huge sea snake comes up on the deck and then one of the ladies comes and grabs it and throws it back out to sea, have a friend propose to his wife and then get married by a neighboring islands chief/ priest two days later and all the women sing the most beautiful songs you've ever heard, party party party, surf surf surf and then be sad when the last day comes and realize you may never be back there again....
p.s. if you need a guide i'm available...

Just when I had convinced myself that spartan, simple trips are all I needed in this life of mine.......

full disclosure, simple trips is the norm for the b.r. clan and especially for b.r. solo trips,
but our trip to Tavarua was paid for a by a guy in town who had done very well$ and rented out a week for 8 years or so and invited about 14 families once a year and took over the entire island. He mixed the group with family friends, his kids coaches families, his kids teachers families and friends of his kids, etc. it was weird to be the recipient of such a generous gesture but a lot of my friends had gone over previous years and I knew the guy and his dad and our kids were friends so off we went. back in the day i could spend a year in Costa Rica on what our room tab was for the week(covered our restaurant tab and incidentals), but i must say it is an incredible place. we had the bonus factor of being on the island with mainly wives and kids and not a lot of surfers, late season too so we only saw non tavarua guests surfing out there a couple times.
granted it wasn't going off but be careful what you wish for. btw small tavarua is a blast, medium sized awesome, and it is a big playing field so you can pick you section of reef and wait.
damn, i'm buying a lotto ticket tomorrow, gonna meet you guys out there! yewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

$12,000 for this trip? That's 8 trips to Mex.

Sounds like that ddue Sean from north county who would take all kinds of people. I was there one year when his party trip came down. pretty wild bunch. the opposite of the family trip. Met some great people on his trip though. stoked they could get down there on his dime.

surf and enjoy

May is a good month, probably the best.

take big boards if you want a piece of 10ft CB.

get in shape, CB dishes out punishment like few other waves.

61; 64, and a 69 semi. All pretty high volume thrusters. The 69 is a battleship that punches above its weight class. If cloud break gets too big for that Board I would probably be surfing restaurants lol

quite a few innuendos in there. This is the erBB after all.

I guess the innuendos were sort of intentional, but for that exact sentence i really was just making a joke about her being able to teach yoga if your usual class is full

turning 40 in october

first born turning 4 in october

have been hinting to the wife hollow trees resort.

I'll probably end up having a taco man (a good one if im lucky) and a bounce house at home.

pray for some decent windswell so I can actually get some turns in this fall.

cheers

Your timing is perfect. I just got back from Tavarua 3 days ago. 40th bday/10th anniversary trip with the wife (non surfer). She was a little bit apprehensive about the trip at first for similar reasons you mentioned, but once we got there she LOVED it. First night there she was already asking me how we can figure out a way to go back with the kids in the next year or two (or as soon as possible).

The timing on the morning/sunrise boat was ideal. I'd get out on the first boat, surf for a couple hours, and we'd usually pull up on the beach right around the time the wife had finished her workout and was heading to breakfast. We'd do breakfast together, then hang by the pool, or snorkel, paddleboard etc... Some days I'd go back out on the after lunch boat. Other days I'd just lounge around the restaurant/pool area with the wife until happy hour/dinner.

If you wanna go nuts and can spring for the extra cash (about $1900 extra), see if you can get them to put you in one wing of the villa. Full on luxury accommodations, totally killer.

Be advised that meals are included, but you have to pay for sodas, smoothies, shakes, as well as all alcohol at the bar. When we go back, I'd grab not only more beers/wine in town before heading out to the island, but any sodas/non-alcoholic drinks that you might want for the week. A few snacks/bars are a good idea as well. Don't forget a re-usable water bottle as well to fill at the bar and take with you on the boat.

A dry bag/waterproof backpack is also a nice thing to have to bring stuff with you when you head out on the boats.

A few of the other families told us they bought a wifi box at the airport for about $80, and could link all their devices up using that instead of the paid wifi on the island. It's $120 for 1 device for the week, $160 for 2 devices if you go through the Tavi office.

My wife's favorite thing we did during the week was take a boat over to Cloud 9, the floating bar that's about 30 mins away. It's not super cheap (bring cash), but a fun way to kill an afternoon and get a good buzz going. You can jump off the second story into the ocean which makes for a good time.

I surfed with another couple that was there on their honeymoon, and the wife wasn't really looking for anything nuts in terms of waves, and she was able to have plenty of fun at Namotu Lefts, Despo's, and even on the smaller days at Cloudbreak. Kiddieland is super user friendly, but more of a playful/beginner wave, not really long rides or anything.

Don't hesitate to shoot me a PM if you want more info.

The place is so killer, if your wife doesn't like it, there's something wrong with her. It's seriously impossible to have a bad time there unless you somehow hate beautiful/warm tropical islands.

Nice! You guys are gonna have a blast. We're already trying to figure out when we can go back. We're gonna set up a bank account specifically for it and then throw cash in there as often as we can so we can make it happen asap.

We did a night in Nadi before going out to the island, and that was nice to get in and get some decent sleep so we could arrive on the island not totally wrecked.

The couple that I surfed with stayed at the Marriott Momi Bay which is about 20 minutes further from the airport than the rest of the Denerau area hotels, but it's only a couple years old and they said it was really nice. The other plus is that you can get picked up directly from the dock at the Marriott Momi Bay to head out to Tavarua and save the long van ride to the landing and the awkward walk out to the boats with the bags.

hmm. interesting. we are planning an extra few nights after the 7 nights on Tavaura, but maybe we will book one of those "extra" nights to the beginning of the trip. Lounging at a Fijian marriott seems like a nice way to prepare for 7 days of tavarua lol

If you haven't been to Tavarua, I'd say book those nights on the front of the trip. We had an afternoon to kill in Nadi on the way home and it seemed like a huge let down after how awesome Tavarua was. We were in the Denerau area hotels which are nice, but just can't stack up to Tavarua. Once we left the island, we kinda just wanted to get home rather than linger in Nadi.

so spend the first 3 nights at the Marriott to adjust to local time, explore the island, hang out and be tourists, etc. Then Saturday Get picked up by Tavaura boat at the Marriott's private dock (awesome)

Then i will be in fine fettle to attack CB and Restaurants for 7 days straight

Then just fly home, blissed out and a little sad to be leaving lol

Yeah, that's probably about how I'd do it. I'd say you could pare that down to 2 nights on the frontend if you wanted. Momi bay is pretty secluded from what I saw, so it'd be a lot of just hanging around the resort there. I guess if you really wanted, you could even boat out to the Tavi area and surf during the first couple days if you hired a boat. It's only about a 20-30 minute boat ride out there from Momi Bay.

I'm still laughing at how perfect your timing was on this post. I'm still working through the post Tavi depression. It's definitely real.

Dammit Subway......
No you got my wheels turning for a trip to Tavarua with my wife. My *problem* is that I want the trip, but I want smaller waves(just overhead max). Oh yeah, and I can't afford it banghead

Have fun.

Definitely explore the island on the front end of the trip. We stayed at Hideaway Resort on the south side. Did some scuba diving, surfed out front on a draining tide (big mistake... only on a filling tide otherwise the entire lagoon empties out and you're taking off over 1' of water and coral). Sigatoka Rivermouth is close by too... fun wave but careful as its sharky. Maybe do the local river tour (I think its a different river than Sigatoka). I heard its rad but its a whole day event. Have fun!

Talk to CASurfer . He and his wife spent a couple
of weeks there . He scored ridiculous waves. Sent
me pics. Never surfed CB or Fiji, but did surf P- Pass with one other guy.
I hope you score big time Subway & PPK and all.

Sounds Epic in the making.
