looking at prior years my effective federal tax rate (i.e., total percentage of taxable income paid for federal taxes) has gone up every year but one since 2013 and actually went up nearly 9% between 2017 and 2018 even though my income dropped by 20%.

so yeah the huge refund (due to overpayment of quarterly estimated payments) was great but at the end of the day the machine takes a bigger cut of my pie every year on an absolute basis.
