I'd like to know how many people polled had even done their taxes when polled.

Wouldn't that be important?

It's hard to notice anything good or bad if you don't even know the numbers.

If you go to the bottom of the Gallup link, it says "View complete question responses and trends". If you click it, it downloads a PDF.

Dates for current questions appear to be April 1-9, 2019.

As to when people tend to file:

So the majority of poll respondents, based on 2015 filing date, had likely filed by the time the questions were asked, and this confirms your suspicions?

I'm all for getting more money back. But is it really a good thing if it just adds to the deficit confused2 It remains to be seen whether this will result in high enough corporate profits, and resulting tax revenue, to pay for it shrug

This. I don't like the extent of the DoD spending. But since the government I in part voted for (or against living in Florida/Jax Beach's district) decided to spend it, f-----g tax it. Don't incur interest expense over the top because whatever dimwitted rationalization in a time of economic growth.

I get called out for being left-leaning by my friends in North/Central Florida. I ask people if they'd rather things stay as they are, or get a 6.5% raise and have their parents and their in-laws looking to move in. Four useless mouths spouting unsolicited advice, sunup to sundown.

It gets quiet, quickly.

The problem is spending.

fook no it isn't.

Personally I haven't supported the plan since the beginning for this reason.

Do I think that's the reason the majority of those polled don't support it?

No.

They don't support it because they think they're getting a tax increase + BAD ORNJ MAN

I wonder what percent of Americans can even define or spell "deficit" ?

The problem is spending.

The deficit is the result of an equation:

Spending - Taxation = Deficit.

Consequently, the problem is just as much taxation as spending. I have seen far more tax increases than spending decreases in my lifetime, with 0 observable adverse effects as a consequence of those tax increases.

The reasonable solution would be to meet in the middle. Of course, most Republican candidates for President rejected $9 in spending cuts for $1 in taxation on the debate stage.

I think it is even more twisted than that. I'm thinking that when we talk about "spending cuts" we aren't actually talking about spending cuts. We're talking about lowering the rate of growth of the spending increase, instead of actually cutting spending.

I'm fine with meeting in the middle, if you mean not raising taxes any higher than they already are

I'm not talking about cutting the "essentials", I'm talking about the billions of wasted dollars in things like foreign aid, perks for officials, and insane shit like Japanese research of cocaine on quails for example

Decreasing the growth rate of spending is still an improvement from the fiscal bottom line's point of view.

Uhh, no. Meeting in the middle means taking the deficit, say $900B, and cutting spending $450B and raising taxes $450B.

Meeting in the middle isn't doing everything you want. JFC.

When the deficit has been created with decades of waste, its not on the taxpayer to pick up the slack

The debt has been created with decades of waste. The deficit was created by Paul Ryan/Mitch McConnell/Trump fiscal illiteracy. Sub in Nancy Pelosi next year.

Here's discretionary, FY2020 Trump proposed, in billions. In general I'm okay with all of it getting a 2/3 haircut to get rid of $900B.

Dept of Defense $750
HHS $89.6
Education $62.0
VA $93.1
Homeland Security $51.7
Energy Dept $31.7
HUD $37.6
State Dept $42.8
NASA $21.0
All Other Agencies $246.5
TOTAL $1,426

Note that almost 1/3 of Energy's budget is DoD shifting nuclear costs to DoE to try to make DoD look like less of a parasite.
