New job is near the Los Alamitos base. Thinking of living right on the beach in Huntington. I need a combination of surf, or at least no-drive ocean access, and enough nightlife to stay sane. Any other options you all would recommend? If anyone has an apartment for rent that meets the criteria, let me know.

I enjoyed living in Laguna Niguel/Dana Pt area for a year but there was no decent nightlife or pizza. I don't know chit about Huntington. OC is a strange place.

With where you're working HB is going to be perfect for the two things you want. Newport would work too, but that could be up to a 45 minute drive up PCH to get to work. Look in the numbered streets of HB and you'll be close to downtown and surf

Yes, living in HB is a good call, and probably checks all of the boxes you mentioned. Going more south might be too much of a commute.

Looking at Craigslist ads right now. Jesus, how do people afford to live in Newport Beach? Of the three houses for rent on the Peninsula, one is falling apart, one is $6500/month, and the other is 22.5k/month.

Other than that rent is redic all over.

Rent in Huntington or Seal Beach if you want to live coastal. It's expensive, but not Newport-expensive. You can get to work in Los Al pretty quickly from those areas.

For a little more affordable housing, look at Westside Costa Mesa. Super close to the ocean, tons of great food close by, and accessible to work.

When I say close to the ocean, I mean I want to be able to see it from my bedroom window and lazily walk over there to jump in every morning. No drive, no cams, no preparation. From what I can see for rent I can afford to live that way in HB, but like you said, ringer, Newport is another world.

Retodd, we will be in touch about secret sandbars. I will pay for the information in your choice of intoxicant.

20W has a place walking distance to the pier in HB; cannot recall exactly what he's paying but it didn't sound too bad when he mentioned it.

maybe he'll rent you his couch and you can enjoy a steel reserve bender for the length of your tenancy.

Go into seal beach with a bicycle. Ride up and down all of the streets in old town looking "for rent" signs. Reasonable rents if you look.

Yeah, I have to tense up to venture into OC these days. It's death race 2019 on the freeways.

I don't see how people can tolerate the population density.

I guess if you come from a crowed asian country or a shit hole, it feels like heaven.

Context is everything.

Depending on your age, living on the Peninsula in NB is fun.

If you're a little older, you can live around Froghouse, the best surf shop ever. Its a little less congested than the peninsula and you can surf River Jetties with ReTodd. I lived there for about 4 years about a decade ago. Parking sucks though unless you're lucky enough to find a place with a garage.

going from LA down to OC - it feels like shangri la down there in comparison. If I could find work down there I'd move there in a heartbeat.

LA sucks.

I'm 20 minutes inland in OC and it gets hot as hell in summer. If you find something affordable like that (and in a good school district) on the coast, let me know. And I will pay you in your choice of intoxicant. So you can pay it forward to retodd with a slight tax. roflmao

I've done a lot of work up at Los Alamitos base over the years. Chill place and some decent food in area.

Yeah, it's overpriced all over in OC but numbered streets in HB are a good bet, not that I've looked at prices recently. Got bars, food, markets within walking distance and surf is right there. Little too much 909 inspiration there for my tastes but small price to pay.

Good luck!

I spent a lot of times down there in the 70s and 80s and loved it.

It all depends on how much you can afford to spend on housing. Work in Los Al is not a bad drive from a lot of good living places. North-Central Coastal OC absolutely rocks if you have a good setup.

I can reasonably afford the 1 bedroom coastal apartments I'm seeing in HB. I could probably afford a cheaper Newport house but would consider it an unreasonable waste of money. I can't afford the $25k house I mentioned earlier.

Does Surfside/Sunset Beach get consistent surf, or is it too shadowed by PV to pull in NW swell?
Will living a block or two off Main Street be irritatingly loud on weekend nights?

Let me be the voice of reason.

Don't do it. The job isn't worth the move.

OC sucks. Southern California sucks. You'll regret the move in 6 months and wish you were back home.

Oh, and the waves suck too.

I'm not kidding.

Does Surfside/Sunset Beach get consistent surf, or is it too shadowed by PV to pull in NW swell?
Will living a block or two off Main Street be irritatingly loud on weekend nights?

Fun little right wedge in sunset up near the jetty. Seems to work ok summer or winter and is generally pretty uncrowded compared to the stretch of beach's south.. Lots of fluffy sightings up that way though in the summer, and the stingrays are out of control.

Get a surfline account and you can check the surf daily! Seal beach south side works best on a long period west swell. River works best on a south swell. Same for surfside and sunset beach.

Go ahead, get grumpy! The resident photogs have blown the place up. But, if the great white sharks, yes, they are there, don't deter you and the stingray population doesn't faze you, there is a hardcore group of guys who have all of those places dialed. And getting a wave off of them isn't easy!

I remember there was a time when surfside/sunset was just all closed out. It wasn't really worth checking out.

And there was this swell and it was perfect and no body out.

We ran back to our car to get our boards in a panic.

I'm from San Diego. Moving "home" would still put me in SoCal. Not "back to the east coast." I do currently live in Sonoma, which has plenty of fluffies and few worthwhile breaks.

OTF, I'd be happy to see your reef setups. I can't wait to drop in on all three of your triplets.

I lived in Dana Point for the four months I worked at Swell.com. It was nice, but Huntington/Newport has better, more consistent surf. It's nice to be close to Trestles, but man, that place is packed, and Huntington (I think) is a better wave than Salt Creek.

At the end of the day it is Orange County. "The OC" is a quasi-epithet for a reason.

I've been banned from better websites than this one.

Orange County is a good place, but it has issues like everywhere. It's not like the SF Bay Area is peaches and cream all of the time. You should enjoy living down here.

OC is not the OC of yesteryear. It's definitely more gentrified and kooks are so common place, they aren't really kooks anymore.

Still, as part of the LA megopolis, it's not a bad choice to pick coastal HB north of the pier area, surf-wise. You could do a lot worse. Traffic will be a culture shock on all but the wee hours of the AM. Good luck.

I live in the tract immediately adjoining and behind Massimos Pizza. They've had a long-successful run with their family-owned business over the decades. Still going strong. Order your food at the counter, sit in the red leatherette booths, grab your beers/other beverages from the refrigerated case, settle up at the end. Cash only. Take out sandwiches are bomb.

The traffic driving around that area would drive me nuts.

This is a bad day for the news media. Lets not kid ourselves, Toobin said on CNN. The larger message that a lot of people are going to take from this story is that the news media are a bunch of leftist liars who are dying to get the president, and theyre willing to lie to do it.

I bought into the Southeast Huntington Beach neighborhood in 1989, which I believe was post-Bobby. I will say that there is nothing else anywhere in California like the immediate neighborhood is now...1960s and 1970s tract homes on decent-sized lots with pools and lots of parking and quiet nights and great public schools nearby: walkable to the sand and consistent surf: the best weather in Orange County, hence the country; easily commutable to all the commercial working centers in OC; tons of great food places nearby.

Ch-ch-cheeto, we just sold our home in Capitola and will be moving the end of this month to NB to be closer to family. Bittersweet. We love Monterey Bay, the redwoods, and the pace, but couldn't convince family to move here. Although I grew up in NB, it's a wildly different place than the '60s-'70s when I was there. New chapter, new adventures.

Good luck to you.

I think the only fun days I have had at Salt Creek have been week days when I have had a window. It is simply too crowded for how few peaks there are. Newport and HB get crowds too, but there are more peaks to spread things out. I can't remember the last time I went to Salt Creek on a weekend.
