How important is volume on these things?

Looking to buy a board off C-list and the one I’m interested in says it’s for 135-190 pound person.

I’m at 185 (so in range) but would I be better off with something for a bigger guy?

FWIW this is just for fitness and not racing.....

Thanks....

Volume is highly important. Too low and you can’t knee paddle which will suck as it’s the fastest stroke and good to switch it up.

I hate to say this on this forum but go with the bark surftech commander WT ghost carbon. It’s designes for people 175-225 and the design picks up bump easily.

Other ideas are to get a board shaped from joe ( I looked into this joe told me to buy surrftech WT because that’s what he would shape me anyways), or from dan Mann.

Used boards in good condition are hard to come by. I can ask the surftech rep if he has a demo he would be willing to part with.

You say just for fitness now but in a few months you’ll have visions of Molokai or Catalina

Agree 100% with Zander. Surftech Commander with the wide tail. At your weight, it's the optimal board. It really is exactly what Joe would shape you for a custom.

Volume is less important than on a surfboard, but if you've got too little it SUCKS. If you've got too much, and you're just looking to duff around on the thing, it's not as big a deal. If you do want to race, get the right one.

As for the ghost carbon construction, if you are lucky enough to find a used one, GET IT. It's way lighter than the normal ST construction and the board is perfect.

And Zander... do I know you? You're not Jebidiah with a Z, are you? Have you done any northern hemisphere races?

I'll second the Surftech recommendation. I have a stock(12') one that I love. I got a 12'6" Paddle/Surf Hybrid from Joe about a month ago and that thing is a blast! Paddle my way down the coast and catch sets when they come in. It's opened up so much range and fun.
I will say that you can sometimes get away with a slightly smaller board if you're just doing it for training purposes on your own. I'm 185lbs and am on the upper end for a stock prone but after some practice I can knee paddle just fine, which I dont do too much of since my primary reason for paddling is still surf conditioning.
