I've often wonder this as well. I've come to the conclusion that they haven't gotten sick yet/haven't seen any personal impact of bad environmental standards. Their team only believes in things when it personally affects them, e.g., the guy that is against Obamacare until he gets lung cancer and it saves his life, or like the greatest example of all time, Dick Cheney's about face on gay rights when his daughter comes out.

Sad, but a lot of black folk didn't trust his white bread upbringing. Wrong storybook, I guess.

yes, they have a large population. yes, coal is quick and easy. yes, China is leaving coal

Coal and oil are both renewable and 100% natural.

Totally true, and that's not changing because the market no longer wants it.

So the question really becomes why Trump is pandering to coal, and why Surfdog thinks that's a good idea.

I don't think coal is the best source for electric energy. Right now natural gas is probably the most dependable source for power plants, and it's much cleaner than even the newer low CO2 coal plants.

My beef is that if coal is SO bad and harmful to build even ONE in the USA, why is it OK to build 1000's of them elsewhere in the world? Not one complaint from the UN/IPCC about China and India building 1000's more coal plants in the next 10-20+ years.

Supposedly we're on the brink of irreversible disaster if we don't curb all major sources of CO2 and such NOW. But, we were also scolded this 5 years, 10 years, 20, 30, 40+ years ago, and so on (Soylent Green).

The USA is only restarting a very few existing coal plants that were shut-down in recent years in regions that are less favorable for solar and wind (northern regions in winter and such), with a potential for a whole ONE new coal plant in Wyoming.

How do you think Alaska would fair if they had to depend on solar in the winter? Would we build new transmission lines/towers from a California desert carpeted with solar panels or vast wind farms?

Canada still gets over 87% of it's energy sources from fossil fuels. Solar accounts for a whopping 3.5%. Solar will probably NEVER be a viable, 24/7/365 source of energy on a wide grid scale in Canada.

Renewables are a great alternative to fossil fuels and should always be a decent supplement to the total power source. If anything, to keep our existing supplies of oil and other fossil fuels around a few 100 years more until tech finds the magic bullet. But to spend $100's of billions, if not $trillions to make it a majority source will be money well wasted. Unless, some all new magical cold fusion source of energy (lithium crystals captain) is discovered that blows all solar, wind, hydrogen, nuclear and others similar away.

A 100 years from now, our tech of today will look like horse and buggies do to us now. And sea levels will only be a few inches higher than today, similar as they were 100 years ago to now.
