@mat I’d bet your fever has more tail rocker than the dx1 which is why you get away with bigger fins.

The DX1 has a deep single concave. The Fever has a subtle single concave. The AM templates are all very rakey for their size, which is a whole nother variable. JJ Mediums are slightly less rakey with a bit more tip area. Deep concave takes rocker out of the center of the board which makes the board more drivey. Raked fins also make the board more drivey. So, the DX1 with Large AM's is going to be very stiff. The Fever with JJ Mediums should be more all around in feel.

That s pretty much spot on man. My JJ Medium on the DX1 feels very all rounder which is great.

And yes, the fever has more tail rocker than the DX1

You guys that drop fin size for bigger waves; do you go from say a medium sized fin to a small?

Yes.

For the most part this only works for bigger guys because if you're riding medium fins normally you're going into grom sized fins for bigger waves. Which will be too small.

Yeah that's what I'm concerned about. I would be dropping from medium to small sized fins, something I haven't messed with especially in bigger surf. Would that be pushing the size small fins to much?

Depends on your weight and the fin.

It can be a costly experiment.

Well I got quite a few sets of small's lying around from my lighter days, not sure 165lbs would be pushing them too bad but I reckon I'll have a go.

sometimes the small, medium, or large is included in the design and not so much the actual size of the fin.

Look at FCS's simon anderson fins. Area wise, they are a small, but listed as a medium. they seem set further back in the tabs with more rake and so on.

which fin system is it you are using? the difference doesn't have to be so drastic.

the accelerator mediums are identical to the old G6 template, which was between a G5 or m5 and m7 in size.
The accelerator smalls are closer to medium fins and I use these in my step-up instead of a generic set like the performer smalls and so forth.

some other in-between medium and small fins would be the old YU's and the mid size AM sets

" My analuysis is that with increased speed you increase water pressure on the fin, especially as you change the angle of attack (turn). "

With 1/4" toe in as speed increases eventually the fin will feel smaller - over releasing needing less toe in to keep pressure on the fin at those speeds .

Using smaller fins will make this worse at this same toe in .

I only drop fin size on guns, not stepups. My am2 quad set goes better than EA quad in a stepup and under DOH surf.

That’s a good example. If I remember correctly both the AM2 and the EAs are labeled as “medium”
