"I imagine you already know that I am much more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic. And yet I am not so opposed to capitalism that I have failed to see its relative merits. It started out with a noble and high motive, viz, to block the trade monopolies of nobles, but like most human systems, it falls victim to the very thing it was revolting against. So today capitalism has outlived its usefulness. It has brought about a system that takes necessities from the masses to give luxuries to the classes."

"As I have walked among the desperate, rejected, and angry young men, I have told them that Molotov cocktails and rifles would not solve their problems. I have tried to offer them my deepest compassion while maintaining my conviction that social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action. But they asked, and rightly so, What about Vietnam? They asked if our own nation wasnt using massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today: my own government. "

I started thinking about the fact that right here in our country we spend millions of dollars every day to store surplus food. And I said to myself: I know where we can store that food free of charge in the wrinkled stomachs of the millions of Gods children in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and even in our own nation, who go to bed hungry at night."

What's the difference between conservatives and liberals?

Conservatives get angry when you lie to them. Liberals get angry when you tell
them the truth.

I get the appeal of communism but at this point it should be clear humans are incapable of pulling it off

Maybe when AI takes over

People commonly pull it off within the family or clan unit. It just doesn't scale well as you lose control of the accountability. It's like a marriage - way easier with 2 people than with 4.

Had a conversation with an Arab Sheik once. Hilarious guy. One thing that stuck out was his comment on multiple wives. Told me it sounds like a dream come true and it does have its positives but if you buy one of them a Mercedes, you better buy ALL of them a Mercedes. Otherwise you never hear the end of it and your life has now become hell.

It still sounds like a dream come true when I imagine being able to buy them all Mercedae.

Milking livestock and shoveling shit with five wives and a dozen period-sync'd ginger daughters 16 hours per day, not so much.

It's bad enough to have one wife complain about stuff. Can you imagine several, especially if they go class-action on you? toilet

One thing a lot of people don't know about the Mormons is that they had a version of communism going for a while that they referred to as the United Order. Some of their offshoots still have variations of it. Choices being made based on what people need as opposed to what they can get for themselves.

Other religious groups have attempted the same type of program - dispersion of resources based on who is deemed to need what rather than on the individual being encouraged to keep what they kill.

I don't know how long that lasted in the main faction of the mormons but I do know that it failed for the same reasons it always fails - people are not naturally altrusitic and servient.

Whether they were right or wrong about MLKs private beliefs about communism, the FBI had good reason to suspect that he did support at least some aspects of it. We can sit back and laugh it off with a revisionist perspective that exists today precisely because we saw the Soviet Union collapse from within in the late 1980s. But as of the 1950s that history and that perspective didn't yet exist.

The morality of opposing international socialism is actually a separate issue from how to proceed if our foreign and domestic policy is to oppose it. Which is how it was back in the day. The FBI didn't create those policies, their job was to support and advance those interests.

In the post-war 1950s Communism was making advances, they were perceived to be the next big threat to humanity in general and democracy in particular. We had just backed down from a shooting war with communism in Korea, and there were colonial and communist uprisings occurring in nations all over the world. And many of those rebellions were based on class tensions that were exploited by the various leaders of those movements whether they were communists or not.

And after all when the communists referred to it as international socialism that was not an exaggeration of their ambitions.

So within the context of the US foreign policy of the 1950s (stop communism by any means necessary) this preacher is choosing to study communism, he is associating with at least a few activist types who reportedly were trained by communists and he is espousing societal change via socialism. Moreover, it isn't that uncommon for social movements to start off one way and escalate via internal power struggles as factions agitate to prove ideological purity. His wasn't the only viewpoint that existed among his supporters. Take the example of BLM or the Proud Boys - both groups have supporters whose aspirations run the gamut and who only share in common parts of the professed agendas of these groups.

Within the context of the current events of the day and especially considering the societal racism of that era the FBI would have been hugely remiss if they didn't take MLK and the law of unintended consequences into consideration.

I visited a commune once, stayed overnight. Their most visible means of support was scavenging the countryside for useful or tradeable objects. Everyone except me was contributing (I was drinking), which I came to learn was rare for the hippie communes of the era. Even so, the commune didn't survive.

After WW II the Red Scare was initiated to cloud the US's and UK's betrayal of the USSR over promises made regarding the status of Poland, et al. The Soviet's reaction to the betrayal played right into the fear and led to the Berlin airlift, and more importantly, to the Cold War.

I used to listen Radio Moscow a lot when I was cruising around the Med. They were always talking about the peaceful and fruitful life in the communes, nothing about hippies though.

Is the left living up to MLK's I have a dream speech or are they trying to keep people forever separated into groups to be exploited for their own political gain?

Face it, the last thing the left wants is for all people to be equal. They want to create even more groups than simply black or white. They want our country as divided as possible to make their goals easier to obtain. They want to keep them thinking and voting as oppressed groups.

What's the difference between conservatives and liberals?

Conservatives get angry when you lie to them. Liberals get angry when you tell
them the truth.
