I've seen a few boards tombstone half-submerged at the end of a leash and get mowed and snapped via leverage by the next wave on bigger days. I suspect a few of mine have gotten chopped this way over the years.

I broke a board at Haapiti while it was in my hands. A big dredging wide sweeper caught me inside and broke in front of me. I duck dove it. I guess I should have bailed the board. I was holding the board in front of me maybe a foot and a half from my chest and face and my eyes were closed because it was all white water as I was being tumbled. I felt the nose of the board bump the reef but it felt mild enough that I though, "Well, I just lost the last inch of the nose." When I came everything in front of my hands was missing, and this was a Tuflite which are pretty burly (my travel board that lasts through everything). I realized how close my face was to getting pounded into the reef.

There was once a thread here on the erBB about duck diving and some guys were getting all macho about never bailing their boards.

A couple days later I was out at a hollow beach break, low tide. A certain point I was in the worst possible spot, but, with the erBB boasts ringing in my head, I thought, "I won't bail. I'll hold on." Boom. trout Came up with a great board in two pieces. I blame the erBB. cussing

Two shoulder separations have made me a bailer as long as no one is behind me. Fvck pride I want to be able to continue to surf.

the last board I broke was a longboard I borrowed from my neighbor for a memorial contest for a friend last winter. high tide morning building swell wasn't too bad for the lb as this beach is usually a better body surfing spot than a longboard wave and I made my two heats and was in the final after the tide dropped out later in the day. got a wave and was paddling back out and a set was coming in, i had to choose which way to paddle and I thought I could beat it but it was gonna break right on me, i tried to hold on to this 9'6 triple stringer Nectar beast of a board and the wave pitched out and broke right on my back smashed me down to the bottom and the board broke in half right on my chest, could have cut my throat open but i got lucky and it just gave me a gnarly chest bruise (hurt for a week), swam back in (no leash of course) were talking longboards here and some kid ran down and gave me a board and I ended up getting third and a free leash and a t shirt,
I call it my 300 dollar t shirt (the only one i own, i don't have any outerknown shirts) after I bought my neighbor another board to replace the one I broke. only time that happened to me while duck diving, usually broke them in close out barrels or getting cleaned up on big days

Both in CA and everywhere else around the world, with the exception of the East Coast, I have seen more boards broken during duck dives than by any other means.

Personally, lots of creases, never any breaks. I've had so many lips come down on boards when I've lost it in the barrel to me it's kinda amazing how often boards don't break.

I duck dove a head high wave a little early, took it on the shoulders, and creased the board. Brand new, never ridden board. Fvck!

I broke five boards in one winter at Off The Wall.

This is what turned me into a bodysurfer.
