For my 16th birthday. This was my 2nd La Jolla Surfboards Twin Pin. 7'6". My first custom was an 8'10 Twin Pin in the summer of '68. I'm bummed I don't have any pictures. I was torn between that and a Nuuihiwa Noserider. All the best surfers in La Jolla were riding Mirandon surfboards. So I had my father take me to their store at the top of the street that led down to Tourmaline I had been bagging groceries at Mayfair Market which has been long gone. Its where the CVS on Pearl is. So I took my hard earned money and put it down on the 8'10. My first board was a used Ekstrom asymetrical. So in summer of 68 I was the proud owner of a transition twin fin inspired by Bob Simmons. The Mirandons have been grossly overlooked as the missing link for the modern fish / twin fin. I specifically remember Nick Mirandon (RIP) that he and his sales manager, Bob Demmler, that they vividly remembered a young Steve Lis came into their store and was tripping on their twin fins. After my second board from Bear and Nick, I tried my hand at shaping a 6'3 twin fin with the help of Dan Evans, a high school friend in the Fall of 69. I'll talk more about this board in my next post. #50yearsoftwinfins #50yearsyoung #talktoyourshaper #handmade @rusty_america @rustysurfboards @rustysurfboards_anz @rusty.brasil @rusty_costarica @rustydelmar @rusty_australia @rusty_argentina @rustyspain @rustyindonesia @rustylajolla

Thanks for the post. Just saw that this morning. Wish he'd post more history. He's so much more influential than many people realize.

I have been to that shop during this time , it later became wind and sea surf shop .

These boards were the inspiration for the swallow tail fish and the first swallow tail shortboards in Hawaii .

Several friends went to Cal Western at Sunset Cliffs at this time .
Ron house was one of them
He was urged by Doug Godfrey another Cal Western surfer to make a swallow tail in Hawaii from this , it was adapted quickly by a famous shaper .
I think Steve Lis was part of this group at the school , I know Ray who created the kkl machine was .
Lots packed into this time

interesting to hear that lis was inspired by mirandon. Eli (son) rips these. there's a video somewhere of him killing it.

some years ago eli mirandon was using some of his dad and uncles ideas and had a board called the porpoise I think, he let me use it for a couple days, fun board, he is a skilled craftsman like his dad but last I saw he was making unique wood furniture, tables , bars, etc. killer stuff probably more lucrative than board building..

when i was a grom i had some great rusty boards, canyon bat tail twin fin and others, then I worked for a shop in IB that he and stu kenson were partners in, we used to get all of the rusty team boards after the guys traded them back in for more, i had a bunch of marty thomas and todd chessers boards which we could buy for super cheap,, luckily they were cheap because I broke them all as they were glassed so light, baja malibroke most of them...
