So right about now is when I thought I'd be getting back in the water. It's not really working out. There's something wrong with my shoulders, especially my left rotator cuff. I went to San-O a couple of weeks ago, and could sort of paddle but when it came time to catch a wave, the last couple of hard strokes just hurt so bad that I would scream and stop paddling.

This sucks beyond all previously known frontiers of suckiness. I was fine during chemo, surgery, radiation, losing my hair, losing my boobs, all of it, because I had deluded myself into thinking that I would be back in the water in December and everything would be unicorns 'n rainbows. I don't know what happened, but I could surf before surgery but not after, even though the incisions are nowhere near my shoulders.

Surfing is a really big deal to me, even though I'm terrible at it. I'm getting really depressed thinking about a life without surfing. bawling violin bawling violin

fook this shit. So tell me everything you know about rotator cuffs . . .

Could be referred pain from the incisions or the surgery site. Stick with it....it will get better.

swim laps. use a buoy and just pull. also use a theraband and do shoulder rehab exercises to get your shoulder muscles back in shape.

good luck, and hope to see you in the water.

with PT could you be back in the water in 6 months? a year?

life has changed for you, embrace it- but never settle. push your limits every day. it never gets easier but you get stronger.

Don't loose sight of the goal- fun; not status or skill or reputation. fun is why we do this.

I'm just a kook from Virginia, what do I know? Bummer your shoulder hurts, that sucks. Hope you surf soon.

Im sorry to hear this Witchy.

About six years ago I injured my back so bad the doc told me I might forever need a cane to walk. You just have to listen to your body and let it heal. Maybe try a surf mat till you are a little stronger. After two years I finally got back in the water and since I lost over 40 pounds I had an excuse to buy new boards- yipeee!

there are still ups and downs but I pretty much am surf crazy like a grom and get out as often as I can handle.

Previously I had four shoulder surgeries and it takes at least a year for any muscles that have been cut to fully heal inside. Cold water still gets to my joints sometimes and everything hurts and feels bound up.

Deep tissue massage can help get the knots out of muscles that havent been used much or have gotten out of whack due to overcompensating etc.

I think the massage therapist I saw on my own dime did way more for me than the orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists ever did.

Just gotta listen to eye of the tiger every morning and get after it. shaka

Get a band and do rotator cuff exercises.

Talk to a rehab specialist, or more than one. Stay determined! You got this Witchipoo.

Ring that bell.

My first encounter with a Rehab specialist was joke. I thought it was a complete scam and they were incompetent. Then I recencty decided to try it again. Went in completely apprehensive but luckily found one that really understands what its all about...technique.

You build up a lot of shoulder strength surfing and paddling. If you take a break from surfing it takes a while to get it back. I'm coming off of a year and a half of injuries and I've been putting a lot of hard work at the gym and in the pool for the past two months. I've made a lot of improvement where the injuries are concerned but paddling a surfboard I'm still way behind where I was in strength, speed and endurance. There really is no good substitute for laying on a surfboard and paddling.

You need to stretch your back and shoulders REALLY good before and after surf.

I'm pulling for you!

And maybe it's not related, but when my wife had her double mastectomy, they took her lat muscles and wrapped them around the front. obviously caused some major changes in her athletic capabilities.

Best of luck. Youll get back at it. Why not get a bodyboard or paipo?

Wishing you the best. Was out for over year with gr 3 AC sep. Surgery in the middle got my collarbone back in place. Afterwards the injury damage, incision damage, scar tissue and atrophy were all against me. You probably have similar issues from your condition minus my injury but plus some of your own.

Reduction of muscle being the biggest issue even after 6 month of PT not only affected strength it also led to looser joints, bumping bones in my shoulder blades and rolling muscle on the front of my shoulder (which may be what you're feeling as how I felt and what you describe). I was doomed, in my head. Practically all went away with regains in muscle and range over time. Eventually, surfing came back working my way down my quiver but if it wasn't for advice I got here, then my surgeon and then a PT that was more P Therapist than P Trainer I'd never made it.

I fired my first PT and stayed with one who did more than count to 15 and watch a timer. He worked my shoulder hands on helping to increase my range and do it safely. He also did the electric therapy the first one did but in addition did what they call Dry Needling to aid release. It hurts and if you're not fond of needles, you may have some avoidance. I would get stuck up to 20 times maybe more but it worked.

When I was ready I started doing pool workouts since I'd rather be in water. A good pair of goggles are key. I pretty much made it up myself. It was fun and I met a lot of nice elderly people. First just moving my arms to treading in deep water. I would tread for as long as I could pushing my time. Then I introduced underwater swim for range, strength and regain lung capacity. Then added resistance to the treading via foam dumbells and weights. Lastly I worked out my chest by laying in the water using kickboards in a reverse press wide and narrow, increasing the number of boards as I gained strength. Then I started to put my feet outside the pool up on the edge of the deck. That helped regain duck diving and lung. Lastly I swam laps as my range, strength and endurance would allow. First with breast stroke until I could do the crawl overtime. When the crawl got kinda comfortable and I was pushing down more than 5 boards I attempted surfing and gym weights, neither was pretty and all takes time to work through.

Sorry so many words but maybe they'll help you or someone else. A lot of my peace of mind and direction for recovery came from some of the commentors here. To them I'll always be thankful.

good luck, and hope to see you in the water.

That's good for strengthening, but if her stroke is bad at all that could cause even worse shoulder damage

I'm all about the band though. Good point

First thing to do is go to an orthopedic surgeon to find out exactly what the problem is.
Once it is correctly diagnosed, you can take the needed steps to fix it.

I had severe pain in one shoulder for a couple of years. My GP just gave me prescription strength Advil and told me to rest it.
When I finally smartened up and went to the ortho, within 5 minutes he diagnosed impingement tendonitis and gave me a sheet of exercises to do.
When I started the exercises, I could barley even do a couple of them with no resistance at all, but within a week, my pain was totally gone.
After a couple of months, I was doing the exercises with 30 lbs. or more on the cable machine.
That was many years ago and I have never had the problem again.

My father in law had a rotator cuff that was totally destroyed by commercial fishing. His tendons had withdrawn and you could see bone where he used to have muscle. He had the surgery and after a couple of months is feeling good. He is cleared to go back on his boat in the spring.

So don't give up. These shoulder problems are almost always fixable and it may be a lot faster and simpler than you imagine. Just find a good specialist to get it accurately diagnosed.
wave2
I have no doubt you will be back in the water soon.

I'd like to try surfing but everyone knows there aren't any waves on the East Coast.

Primarily use your legs to kick into waves, but slowly bring in arm strokes too. Good luck!

+1 on the PT specialist, and +1 on the sponge in the meantime.

That way you at least get to ride waves.
You can also try out different spots you could never ride on a surfboard as well. that helped me scratch the itch while I was hurt. Good luck witchipoo!

I knew I could count on you guys for practical advice. I'm doing PT, but with my insurance and other fuckery going on I can only get in once in a while. I'm doing the exercises they give me, but there's definitely something going on with my left rotator cuff. A tear or something. And I have numbness in my hands and tingling sensations shooting down my left arm. I'm on medication that causes some nasty side effects, including numbness and tingling and bone loss, so there's that too.

I was extra bummed yesterday because I'm trying to re-learn drums so I can play this benefit show my old band set up to help me pay my bills. Tickets are already sold, and I don't want to totally suck. Yesterday I went to practice and it hurt and I got tired and discouraged really fast (I'm on THREE medications whose main side effect is fatigue banghead) My PT says drums aren't the greatest idea, but I HAVE to do this.

So I thought I was having a huge existential crisis, but it turns out I was just hungry. foreheadslap roflmao I ate dinner after I posted and felt a little better about the whole thing, but I still miss surfing something awful. Looks like a mat or sponge is the next step. I know nothing about fins, etc. so post up any recommendations for that stuff . . .

Da Fin fins and a hand-plane and you will be having a blast in no time. A little sketch for the shoulders though if there is any size. Paipo or boog is probably better.

If all else fails, I - and I'm sure others would too - volunteer to come down and push you into some Sunslop runners anytime you like. Best of luck Witchi cheers

might be the upper back, not the neck. my dad had the numbness in hands, tingling etc. it got so back his legs started becoming weak too. his hands weren't too functional. he got a splint kind of thing in his spine, can't remember exactly the procedure. after about a month the numbness when away and his legs gained strength back. maybe don't need something radical as surgery, but either a chiropractor or acupuncture in the back?

If you don't have an accurate diagnosis, the PT you are receiving could be doing more harm than good.

"there's definitely something going on with my left rotator cuff. A tear or something. And I have numbness in my hands and tingling sensations shooting down my left arm."

You need to know what the something is.

There is probably a really good orthopedic surgeon in your area who specializes in sports/work injuries of this type. It doesn't cost any more to see the best guy rather than the run of the mill doctor who is convenient.

Physical Therapists can be great but you need to know exactly what is happening for them to give you the help you need.

I'd like to try surfing but everyone knows there aren't any waves on the East Coast.

I don't know much about the cuffs but I think they just have expiration dates.

Mine are starting to go bad and I've been going to a physical therapist for months now. Not much improvement, although the screaming pain I had is gone.

I am almost 60. I have a friend who is ten years older than me. Many years ago he gave me some good advice-

IF YOU WANT TO SURF FOR A LONG TIME, DON'T SURF FOR A LONG TIME.

Meaning, if you want to surf into old age, don't do three and four hour sessions. He claims the damage you do gets exponentially worse the longer you surf. If you're getting sore and you keep surfing you're doing damage.

I used to have what I call the "two hour alarm" where my shoulders would start hurting after two hours. Now it's really a one hour alarm but I try to ignore it and go for an hour and a half, especially now that there are decent waves. Of course I'm stupid like that. I should just catch five good ones and get out.

I'm left handed and tore my left rotator (not that it matters but tearing your dominant arm just adds to the misery)
hurt so bad I didn't surf for quite some time, I simply couldn't paddle
one thing that has helped me is body surfing... put the fins on and get in the water and move around... swim.. its made a world of difference
there are many great recs posted here..
but as its been said a thousand times.. water time, there is nothing like it... start on the boogie... get in.. because you'll be forced to swim eventually.. highly rec swim fins as the pain rises in your shoulder you can push w your legs more to recover and get back on top of the water
yes you can do laps in a pool.. but being in the ocean rather than a pool also helps with your emotional state (as most of us know)

one hell of a story you have, congratulations

Honestly, just try it for where you are at right now... SO much more comfortable, and you can get covered on a 2 foot day again and again... You'll need swim fins for sure.

Ill attend this pity party
Hopefully you can get a diagnosis of the cause so you can be sure that the PT youre doing is the right PT and you get back in the water as quick as possible

To be honest, and not to minimize the disappointment youre experiencing, when I read the title of the post, I was thinking it was something way worse.
Hang in there
You will surf again!

Oh,
I experienced the same thing with numbness in the pinky and ring finger too with shoulder pain especially while surfing. It then later went into the middle finger and index, just on one side/arm. Ive had a bunch of MRIs for other issues, but what the MRI shows is happening is that the tightening of the Cervical Spine, C6, C7 around those nerves is occuring. Some may call it bone spurs or arthritus. Those nerves in the C6, C7, run from your neck, in the shoulder blade area to your fingers. The spine is shrinking around the nerve cords and thus inflamation and pain.

First was to knock out the inflamation. Prednisoe (steriod) for a few days, then 800mg Motrin. It worked for me. Then it was into PT with a bunch of specific excerices. It has really helped. No pain while paddleing or surfing.

******Follow Oceans# advice below...get an MRI (and go through the hoops first to get one) and go from there.

I don't know your insurance situation, but I do know that an erBB diagnosis and recommendation of PT exercises - while entirely well-meaning - is likely not the route you want to go. Wrong exercises can exacerbate it.

I strongly suggest pushing for an MRI through your insurance. They may require an x-ray, or exhaustion of PT first, but ultimately it should be something you can get done. Once you have a competent physician examine the MRI, you'll have a better idea what may be going wrong.

This coming from a guy who has had one shoulder worked on and the second coming up for a clean up in the future. I grew up doing literally all heavy shoulder-impact sports and have probably the mileage of a 70 year old. Our major joints simply wear down with enough use.

Anyway, chin up! I haven't surfed in two months - though its knee related - but you'll be back at it.

Sponging is an option. Kneeboarding might be a better option.

Consider it a transitional period.

ocean can attest.

I've blown both of mine, multiple times. I have fvcked up shoulders.

First off, rest until they don't hurt. Bottom line. Then make this your life:

https://www.orthoinfo.org/globalassets/pdfs/2017-rehab_shoulder.pdf

You can come back. It worked for me. But the bottom line is this -- once you mess up your rotator cuffs, it is either surgery or you have to pack on the muscle to keep those things place. So... pack on the muscle.

You have a lot of surf years left in you Witchipoo. Never give up.

You actually seem to be compatible. Kneeboardingwise.

Hi Witchi---

I don't have any advice, other than to get out into the ocean sometimes, on a bodyboard or otherwise. It'll make ya feel better. Stay strong.

I saw a post where someone with rotator cuff issues was able to continue surfing by knee paddling boards rather than prone paddling them. How do you feel about longboarding? I'm guessing not so fond.
Bodyboarding or paipos can be fun too.

The numbness in the hands and tingling in your left arm could very well be C-spine issues. There's a giant nerve bundle in the shoulders that's easily affected by impingement in the neck. I went through this for quite a while after a bad neck injury - thought that I had major shoulder problems, which I didn't have.

The thing that saved me was a simple neck exercise of standing against a wall with shoulders rotated back into their 'pockets', then a forced chin tuck - as if trying to push the back of your neck flat to the wall. A more advanced version - don't do this right away - is slowly tilting/turning the head to either side.

Here's a decent version of it here (the guy's a bit much but persevere for the exercise):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YyA96CfNhA

After my injury I was told by several different docs that I would never climb or surf or even train again. One gave me the brilliant advice of getting use to a life in slippers. So, it took a while, but I got it back, mostly. If I didn't have other injuries I'd be all the way back.

Don't know you Witchi but I'm totally pulling for you! You can do this!

I know nothing about fins, etc. so post up any recommendations for that stuff . . .

Can some~one help kick start a GoFundMe campaign for Janet, aka Witchipoo?
Thanks, she probably could use our help. I'll do my part askin' at some beaches she likes.
Maybe we can make a small difference in her life as she battles this cancer...

You had a double mastectomy?

Maybe you don't have any injury to the rotator cuff but have a shoulder, back, and chest muscle/tendon trauma from the operation and when everything healed up, it all healed up super tight and your range of motion is nothing like it was. Apparently this is a recognized thing.

Maybe some post-op post boob surgery exercises is what you need.

Talk to your doc anyway....that is best.

Doug is right about the referred pain

If you got your tits cut off that could totally be referring in the shoulder.

I had rotator cuff issues in both shoulders but both are better now. There are some fairly simple exercises that help but it may take some time for the pain to completely go away. The pain used to make sleeping difficult, let alone surfing. Best of luck with your healing and your upcoming gig. I hope you'll let us know when and where it is so we can come cheer you on/heckle you.

I'm sorry, I didn't read all the comments but please have your shoulder properly diagnosed!

I've had a similar pain in my right shoulder and immediately sunk deep into despair thinking it's a rotator cuff.
I was so convinced that I started preparing myself mentally that I will have to quit surfing. bawling

Turns out it was a frozen shoulder. Felt like hell for a few months but I eventually regained the full motion and am still pain free 10 years later.

Hang in there, be patient, and do what the Doctor tells you. Lots of specific rotator cuff exercises as well....a Physical Therapist can help out a lot. Even just sitting down and doing figure eights with a very light weight (or none at all to start) helps the rotator cuff.

Right shoulder pain could be gall bladder or liver issues.

A threat response is a potent trigger for motivated reasoning.

I think my shoulder, and the entire left side of my body, was already fucked up before the cancer, and that the surgery just put the finishing touches on it. You may have noticed that in the pictures Randy posted, I'm usually in this weird position where I'm crouching on one knee. That's because my left leg, hip, and lower back are just . . . wrong. When I pop up like a normal person, my left foot drags and I end up back in the crouch and have to get up from there. This has been going on for like nineteen years. I think I hurt it when I was a teenager and it never really recovered. I also walk with a limp when I'm tired, so there's definitely something not right.

Anyway, I'm doing PT every day, and I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow where I'm going to beg for an MRI. This stuff has made me surf crappy for years but it wasn't until I couldn't surf at all that I got motivated to do something about it . . .

. . . and your little dog, too!

Mucho respect for your attitude with what you've had to deal with. I hope you find a way to get back in the water and enjoy some waves pain free. It may not relate but i'd thought i'd throw it out there - suffered a whiplash type injury on a pretty big day. I came off the lip going backside and did a 10' free fall and didn't get my arms out in front in time. I hit the trough face first and it felt like concrete - immediately got what felt like an electrical shock through my shoulder and arm. Long story short - i spent a lot of time and effort trying to rehab my shoulder - over 10 months - nothing seemed to work. While doing some research online came across some articles describing how shoulder injuries can be symptomatic of neck injuries. So started researching self help articles on neck injuries and came across some routine neck exercises. After a month of incorporating the neck exercises in my daily yoga/stretch routine - my shoulder is pain free. We had planned on a trip back to the US - this month and while there i was going to pick up a shoulder compression sleeve that i could wear while surfing, but because of the results from the neck exercises - decided i didn't need it.

Hey, it has been a while.

What did the MRI show/what did the docs say?

Got more range of motion now?

See a PT yet?

Been back in that water at all?

You don't have to answer, but be nice to have an update.
