You build up a lot of shoulder strength surfing and paddling. If you take a break from surfing it takes a while to get it back. I'm coming off of a year and a half of injuries and I've been putting a lot of hard work at the gym and in the pool for the past two months. I've made a lot of improvement where the injuries are concerned but paddling a surfboard I'm still way behind where I was in strength, speed and endurance. There really is no good substitute for laying on a surfboard and paddling.

You need to stretch your back and shoulders REALLY good before and after surf.

I'm pulling for you!

And maybe it's not related, but when my wife had her double mastectomy, they took her lat muscles and wrapped them around the front. obviously caused some major changes in her athletic capabilities.

Best of luck. Youll get back at it. Why not get a bodyboard or paipo?

Wishing you the best. Was out for over year with gr 3 AC sep. Surgery in the middle got my collarbone back in place. Afterwards the injury damage, incision damage, scar tissue and atrophy were all against me. You probably have similar issues from your condition minus my injury but plus some of your own.

Reduction of muscle being the biggest issue even after 6 month of PT not only affected strength it also led to looser joints, bumping bones in my shoulder blades and rolling muscle on the front of my shoulder (which may be what you're feeling as how I felt and what you describe). I was doomed, in my head. Practically all went away with regains in muscle and range over time. Eventually, surfing came back working my way down my quiver but if it wasn't for advice I got here, then my surgeon and then a PT that was more P Therapist than P Trainer I'd never made it.

I fired my first PT and stayed with one who did more than count to 15 and watch a timer. He worked my shoulder hands on helping to increase my range and do it safely. He also did the electric therapy the first one did but in addition did what they call Dry Needling to aid release. It hurts and if you're not fond of needles, you may have some avoidance. I would get stuck up to 20 times maybe more but it worked.

When I was ready I started doing pool workouts since I'd rather be in water. A good pair of goggles are key. I pretty much made it up myself. It was fun and I met a lot of nice elderly people. First just moving my arms to treading in deep water. I would tread for as long as I could pushing my time. Then I introduced underwater swim for range, strength and regain lung capacity. Then added resistance to the treading via foam dumbells and weights. Lastly I worked out my chest by laying in the water using kickboards in a reverse press wide and narrow, increasing the number of boards as I gained strength. Then I started to put my feet outside the pool up on the edge of the deck. That helped regain duck diving and lung. Lastly I swam laps as my range, strength and endurance would allow. First with breast stroke until I could do the crawl overtime. When the crawl got kinda comfortable and I was pushing down more than 5 boards I attempted surfing and gym weights, neither was pretty and all takes time to work through.

Sorry so many words but maybe they'll help you or someone else. A lot of my peace of mind and direction for recovery came from some of the commentors here. To them I'll always be thankful.

good luck, and hope to see you in the water.

That's good for strengthening, but if her stroke is bad at all that could cause even worse shoulder damage

I'm all about the band though. Good point

First thing to do is go to an orthopedic surgeon to find out exactly what the problem is.
Once it is correctly diagnosed, you can take the needed steps to fix it.

I had severe pain in one shoulder for a couple of years. My GP just gave me prescription strength Advil and told me to rest it.
When I finally smartened up and went to the ortho, within 5 minutes he diagnosed impingement tendonitis and gave me a sheet of exercises to do.
When I started the exercises, I could barley even do a couple of them with no resistance at all, but within a week, my pain was totally gone.
After a couple of months, I was doing the exercises with 30 lbs. or more on the cable machine.
That was many years ago and I have never had the problem again.

My father in law had a rotator cuff that was totally destroyed by commercial fishing. His tendons had withdrawn and you could see bone where he used to have muscle. He had the surgery and after a couple of months is feeling good. He is cleared to go back on his boat in the spring.

So don't give up. These shoulder problems are almost always fixable and it may be a lot faster and simpler than you imagine. Just find a good specialist to get it accurately diagnosed.

I have no doubt you will be back in the water soon.

sponge says ride a sponge.

Primarily use your legs to kick into waves, but slowly bring in arm strokes too. Good luck!

+1 on the PT specialist, and +1 on the sponge in the meantime.

That way you at least get to ride waves.
You can also try out different spots you could never ride on a surfboard as well. that helped me scratch the itch while I was hurt. Good luck witchipoo!

I knew I could count on you guys for practical advice. I'm doing PT, but with my insurance and other fuckery going on I can only get in once in a while. I'm doing the exercises they give me, but there's definitely something going on with my left rotator cuff. A tear or something. And I have numbness in my hands and tingling sensations shooting down my left arm. I'm on medication that causes some nasty side effects, including numbness and tingling and bone loss, so there's that too.

I was extra bummed yesterday because I'm trying to re-learn drums so I can play this benefit show my old band set up to help me pay my bills. Tickets are already sold, and I don't want to totally suck. Yesterday I went to practice and it hurt and I got tired and discouraged really fast (I'm on THREE medications whose main side effect is fatigue banghead) My PT says drums aren't the greatest idea, but I HAVE to do this.

So I thought I was having a huge existential crisis, but it turns out I was just hungry. foreheadslap roflmao I ate dinner after I posted and felt a little better about the whole thing, but I still miss surfing something awful. Looks like a mat or sponge is the next step. I know nothing about fins, etc. so post up any recommendations for that stuff . . .

Take the boogie out.

Look at the bright side, people can't call you a dick dragger!

Da Fin fins and a hand-plane and you will be having a blast in no time. A little sketch for the shoulders though if there is any size. Paipo or boog is probably better.

If all else fails, I - and I'm sure others would too - volunteer to come down and push you into some Sunslop runners anytime you like. Best of luck Witchi cheers
