Came in from overseas today into LAX. Wait times were easy, but the agents said they are working without paychecks. Luckily I left the country before the shutdowns.

90 minute security lines at LaGuardia today, and TSA pre check closed:

Yosemite National Park, CA Simi Valley resident and self-proclaimed Libertarian Joshua M. Bateman said he can finally enjoy our national parks now that a government shutdown is in effect. The 44-year-old father of 2 says this is exactly how it should be all the time.

Look, our national parks arent about real liberty, said Mr. Bateman making his way through heaps of discarded trash at the abandoned Yosemite Valley visitors center. There should never be the word national in our park names anyway. They should be run by volunteers. You know, by people who give freely of their resources and not by some central, socialist government agency. Think about it: our National Parks are theft.

With few staff on duty in several national parks due to the current government shutdown, reports of overflowing trash, human waste, illegal off-roading and damage to normally restricted and even public areas.

Its a libertarian paradise, continued Mr. Bateman. I can do whatever I want and theres no tyrannical park ranger to tell me to stop. And I got in without having to pay for it. I brought our 4 ATVs and the kids are tearing up the meadows. My son chased down a bear and scared the crap out of it. It was a real blast.

Furloughed Officials Express Concern
Officials who oversee both the park administration and operations are voicing concern about the lack of park management.

Were afraid that were going to start seeing significant damage to the natural resources in parks and potentially to historic and other cultural artifacts, said senior budget director of the nonprofit National Parks Conservation Association John Garder, according to the Associated Press. Were concerned therell be impacts to visitors safety. Its really a nightmare scenario.

As for Mr. Bateman, hes telling all of his like-minded Libertarian friends to come join him.

There are a lot of people like me who hate how the government runs things. Im telling all of my buddies to bring their families to soak in all of this liberty while it lasts. A couple of my hunting pals will be able to drag home all kinds of scores. Theyll be able to fill up their pickup trucks.

Personal opinion: There should be no National Parks other than the monuments in DC. All National Parks should be put in the hands of the states to run. Get the federal government out of the park business.

National parks/public land is one of the few things that are much more beneficial to the general population and parks themselves to remain in federal hands.

The airlines could run their own security much more effectively and cheaply than the TSA.

The TSA didn't even exist 20 years ago, and air travel was better

Not arguing against the value of parks. Just that they would be better run in the hands of the states. You guys in California have some great state parks. Do you think they'd be better run by the feds or at the state level?

The concern of terrorists flying buildings into planes wasnt a concern 20 years ago either. I dont disagreee that it could be done by the airlines, but this is the system we have at the moment and its not going anywhere for the time being trout

Terrorism on airplanes wasn't invented on 911

I think grapedrink was referring to ramped up security due to an attack utilizing commercial airliners on US soil. Caught us sleeping essentially. obviously it wasnt the invention of terrorism on commercial airliners, but it was a first for the USA. Things were and are never going back to how they were 20 years ago after that. With the way things are going worldwide I would hope they dont.

I dont disagree that it could be a whole lot more efficient. But the lax up on security at airports just seems silly to me shrug

Yeah, no crap rolleyes but we obviously had far more relaxed standards and were afraid of different outcomes, which is how we ended up with 9/11 being as bad as it was in the first place trout

Yes, terrorists forcing there way into cockpits and flying planes into buildings was not a concern pre 9/11, which was about 17 years ago. Highjackings were used to either fly the plane to another location or force the plane into the ground, at worst. Cockpits used to be unlocked, often with the door wide open. Which also explains why someone at a flight school who claiming he did not need to know how to land a plane did not raise any red flags.
