Seeing as how I'm a complete podcast junkie now and many on here are as well I figured I'd put up a generic thread to discuss.

Post up any surf related podcasts here and discuss the interviews.

I just finished Surf Splendor's interview of Maurice Cole. Most excellent, and what a life that guy's had!

Cool to hear his thoughts on modern day surfing and design (stagnate), if he could order a board from anyone it would be Ryan Burch, and he really digs the Machado boards (go fish and seaside).

Thanks for posting this. I was about to do the same after listening to Ryan Sakal's episode w/ Bassy. I was on the high school surf team w/ Ryan when he shaped his first board. One of the best surfer/shapers around. Don't know him now, but seems really down to earth. His dad shaped me my first custom when I was 12, under his Bullit label (5'0 x 17-something x 2").

Haven't listened to Maurice's, yet, but am looking forward to it. I shaped my second board listening to his 3-hr interview w/ Bassy about 15 years ago.

Skip Damo Hobgoblin's unless you're a Jesus freak. Got a few minutes in and couldn't hang. Bassy needs to stick w/ shapers and boards.

I think David Scales does a really good job letting the shapers go where they want to, regarding content. The Pat Rawson episode is good stuff if you're into foam talk.

I need to get on that Sakal interview, thanks for the reminder.

Damn that Hobgoblin interview was horrid. I'm trying to me more open minded and tolerable of the Jesus freak stuff but that was so bad it was akward... like really?

I would love to hear Biolos part 2, burch, rusty, alan gibbons, stretch, the list goes on. I think both bassy and david do a great job.

Around 10 years ago Bill Barnfield on Swaylocks said he felt Maurice got his Reverse Vee design from his boards .

Swaylocks is a big fan of Bill .

Then

Out of nowhere Maurice chimed in clarifying this - great fun

I wasn't much of a fan of Chas Smith's writing, even on Beachgrit, but I really enjoy the banter he and David Lee Scales have on the Grit.

Some of the Surf Splendor pods I really liked this year were Jaime Brisick and David Carson. Just great listening.

Parmenter's three part on surfboard manufacturing/durability, fascinating.

Jeff McCallum from the archives ~ I had no idea this guy only made stock boards.

Not actually a fan of Bassy's interview style, I think he reaches too much for controversial subjects instead of letting them naturally become part of the conversation.

All of David Lee Scales' podcasts are great. I'd also recommend Ain't That Swell - absolute classic Aussie mentalists. Lipped is also good, but much more straight faced.

Here's another "morris" cole podcast.

https://lippedsurferspodcast.libsyn.com/maurice-cole-the-return

The others on my list of surf podcasts that haven't been mentioned yet.

Surf Simply (surf coaching school in costa rica)

KooksOfKomedy (now defunct but it was 2 comedians who are bad surfer's discussing comedy and surfing)

The Monday M.A.S.S. (Chris cote's weekly board sports show. I mostly just fast forward to the surfing segment. He has Todd Richards on most weeks now)

The Drop (now defunct but had some good episodes. Shane Dorian and Nathan noodles Webster. Sponsored by stab.

The dooley (probably defunct now. It was a what happened this week in surf quiz by the wet lettuce Danny Johnson and Mike Jennings - editor of surfing world)

The Kyle Thierman Show (occasionally has a guest I'll want to listen to. Mostly I skip these though)

Looking Sideways Action Sports Podcast (Sometimes a good guest)

Don't forget Ain't That Swell!!!!!!!!!

Quite a big following in Oz. Pretty Aussie-centric (which is a good thing)...

I'm really enjoying Surf Splendor. David Scales is a really good interviewer.

Bassy, not so much. It sounds like he's more interested in asking the next question rather than listening to the answers his guests give. And he's constantly giving them advice on how to market things which doesn't seem to go over well much of the time.

He's a better interviewer than Occy though. There are a few good episodes of the Occ Cast, but in comparison, that podcast sucks.

Sakal was good. Always nice to hear people that are into other things as well and can compare the cultures.

Hynd dropping tomorrow?

there was an episode with a shaper who said offhandedly that he managed custom orders through his website and the customer could check in on order status... does anyone remember who that was? it was a smaller label if memory serves, i've heard so many of these that they start to bleed together.

He is a kook. There's a video of him at Kelly's ranch and he can barely pump down the line. What's better is that beachgrit makes fun of the new wsl guy for being an adult learner, when clearly chas is.

Now that I know he can't surf, it makes all his BS he spews even more bs. Like some people that post here. rolleyes

XTR. They have a spreadsheet that they update weekly where you can check the status of your board build.

Surf Spendor's interview with Derek Hynd is beyond epic. The bit where he described the surf incident that cost him his sight in one eye will shock you, make you laugh, grimace and groan all within 20 minutes...

For sure that was one - but there was someone else... i thought it was parmenter or timmy patterson but i think i'm wrong on both counts. it was someone who i didn't expect to take a digital approach to order management, for whatever reason.

the spreadsheet system seems like take a lot of work. order cards with QR's an some dedicated phones in the shop to snap pictures at each step might fit the workflow better / give better results

^ seriously.

I love the guys and am very grateful too for the content... that said, the latest one with Devin and Chas was a cringeathon. christ from the foil opinions to hearing them say "Le QWA" (La Croix) over and over again, jesus.

It's actually pronounced "shit" cause it sucks and I don't understand why people like it.

The wave you're referring to shows him surfing better than 75% of the people in the water.

Would you go balls out on what was your first of maybe 2 or 3 waves at the Surf Ranch?

No. You would take it easy and get a feel, than maybe a barrel at the end like Chas.

Chas has surfed since he was a kid. He grew up in Coos Bay. So my guess is he isn't a kook or an adult learner but a surf addict.

What has Chas spewed that's BS?

From what I've heard most people in surfing outside of WSL management/investors and the STAB advertorial group like the guy.

Even if someone is just cruising, it's easy to tell if they can surf or not. He clearly can't. Have another video of him?

His strong opinions mean as much as Erik Logan's. Adult learner, Johnny come lately kook stoke.

almost finished w/ the MC podcast on the way into work today.

Can somebody tell me where I need to fast forward to past all the Jesus talk? I wanna hear about what MC thinks about Burch. Why do these surfboard podcasts keep going back to Christianity? foreheadslap

Just keep listening. It's annoying but worth it.

You should listen through that bit. Worth it, as it's part of the big picture.

And MC isn't being all hallelujah on us, but is talking about finding something to anchor him in the middle of a life shitstorm. And, thankfully, not trying to convert the rest of us.

Kyle Theirmann podcast with Kai Lenny and Jeff Clark wasn't a bad way to kill an hour while driving for work today.

Finished it on the way home today. Here's my take:
I love listening to MC mainly b/c he's good at conveying his passion for his design, and he's good at talking it up. I had to have one of his deep concave boards after he resurrected his label from the BASE debacle. My good friend wanted one, too, and now, MCs are all he rides.

I'm not surprised that he turned to Jesus, given his past. I feel like religion recruits people that need hope in their lives. I'm a science person, and there's no place for the supernatural or invisible people in my life (but that's me).

It was super interesting hearing the last segment on Burch and Machado. MC took David's standard questions and ran w/ it. It was interesting to hear how much MC respects them. I also noticed how he refers to Machado as a designer, as opposed to a shaper. I think Machado falls into the category of amazing surfer that could make anything work.

Latest episode of Spit is somewhat interesting. Talks about a drunk altercation with Hayden and AJW about overseas production.

Then David asks Bassy what his true take is on the overseas boards. He explains pretty well why a lot of people support their local shaper.

Thanks, I'll listen to it next. I just finished Derek hynd's. I thought the most interesting part was at the end when he talks about the drug influence in the industry. Wish David asked him about the pro who tested positive for PEDs.

Currently on the Tomo podcast. I think Tomo made a good choice in signing w fw. He has a sweet life bc of it. I was laughing to myself when bassy asked if he's recognized in the parking lots now, and immediately thought of our new resident fw fanboi.

Lol yeah I thought that was funny too. Imagine how many people paddle up to and around you. I'd be annoyed but It comes with the territory I guess.

I'm not a fan of FW but I absolutely cannot blame tomo for going that route. He seems to have the greatest shaping gig in the industry IMO.

Just finished the Derek Hynd interview.

That guy needs to smoke a joint.

I can't even imagine how far beyond the looking glass he would go.

Haha! I was just gonna post something along those lines. The last few ones Scott Bass has done have been full of that fairytale: Damien Hobgood, Ryan Sakal...I usually just stop listening. Gets tiring. The Surf Splendor one with Switchfoot was going the same way, so I stopped that one too. NO ONE CARES! WE JUST WANNA LISTEN TO SURF STUFF AND STORIES OF PEOPLE GETTING DRUNK N WILD AND RAGING!

Listened to the Chris Mauro one today, very different conversation as Bassy knows Mauro well.

Cool insider stories from the surf mag glory days, the dot.com bubble and surprisingly the WSL media machine.

That was a really good interview......except when Bassy steps all over Chris as he's trying to finish a thought.

Hey Bassy. Let your guests finish a sentence. pokestick

Bassy is a chauvinist, a xenophobe, a poor attempt at a sensationalist, and a chronic interrupter. There have been parts of episodes on Spit! that left me absolutely cringing. His boardroom show is a great concept and I love what it's done for the board building community, but his ignorance is hard to take sometimes. As an interviewer, he tends to tee people up with questions asked so they can provide an answer he's like, rather than asking questions so they can explore the idea or provide an opportunity to tell a story. Then he cuts them off. The episode where him and David argue over the way the show is promoted was embarrassing. Yes Scott, you started podcasting before others, we know. David is better at it.

That being said, I listen to all the stuff on Surf Splendor.

I used to think the same thing of Bass, but now really enjoy him just took me a while to get him.

Hes very self-aware and witty, and open about his own shortcomings, which I find endearing. He's also not afraid to say the things we all think, and I appreciate that kind of candour.

Whats giving me the shits though, is the number of magic sky Jew flavoured episodes spread across the Surf Splendour network of podcasts. I realise it's a bit of a thing among surfers for some reason, but still annoys me to be subjected to it.

Yeah...

I think he believes he is self aware. He definitely finds opportunities to imply how self aware he is, but he clearly isn't able to be aware of some of the things he says in real time.

I think some of the things "we all think" but don't say, might be because we know that our first thought is not always our most reasoned and knowledgable response. For example, stating that he doesn't follow the women's tour because they don't surf well enough is fine. But when he gets super objectifying and rude about it, it gets to be a little much. Or when he criticizes Kanoa Igarashi because his way of celebrating his win at the US Open was not "traditionally Japanese enough", is not a matter of "saying what we all think" as much as it is a complete lack of self awareness.

Finally, I don't know what "magic sky Jew flavored" means. Christianity? ok. I don't really dig it either, but seems like a weird way of referencing it. When a guest brings up religion as part of their life story, I think it's totally valid and reasonable. When Bassy points points the guests into that direction, or others, it seems forced and unlistenable.

Again, all that being said, I enjoy the care taken to create episodes with solid production quality, the increasing breadth and variety of guests, and the sheer amount of content that Scales produces. Bassy laid a lot of groundwork for that and often brings some great insight to the SPIT show, but I'm really happy that David got his legs under him and continued growing in the platform.

Fair response, I think our definition (and maybe mines off the mark) of self-awareness is different. To my mind, self-awareness can be retrospective with the aim to improve, while emotional intelligence is the in the moment. To be clear, I agree with the examples given and salient point you make at the end, I just tend to give Bass much more benefit of the doubt than saying chauvinist, a xenophobe, a poor attempt at a sensationalist, as those are quite harsh labels imo.

Yes, its a silly way to refer to a silly topic, I just have far too much of it in my life. Its probably because I have an evangelistic (is that a word?) young-earth creationist sat next to me in the office and my tolerance for the topic has hit an all-time low.

Dann Mann up next looking forward to that.

I like Bassy. He does interupt too much but overall I dig his interviews.

Just started this one - hope he doesn't spend the entire time talking about "tribes".

overall pretty darn good. I always like listening to stories about local guys too.

But yeah thanks to this thread I noticed Bassy interupting him quite a bit, and bassy did too. And stop with the religion. fook!

Bassy's question to Dan Mann out of the blue:

Bassy: "Do you believe in God?"

Dan Mann: "Uhhhhh, good question"

rolleyes

Zero relevance to anything they were talking about.

Dan seems like a really cool, down to earth guy.

Fun fact: Work colleague next to me was all excited to tell me about meeting Ken Ham, and wanted to try help him to bring the ark experience to Australia (that one where they show Dinos on the boat with humans and other animals), because science. I cried myself to sleep.

Indeed. I think those definitions explain the divide in our conversation.

I'm being a bit harsh on the old boy, as those labels refer to a few specific talking points that have popped up on the show. It may be that he tries to play devil's advocate and never brings the conversation full circle, or it may be that he's just that myopic on some topics. His "America First" stuff toes a line, and usually crosses into, America>> ____. For reference, the episode about Kanoa wining the US Open. See also his depiction of Brazilian surfers. See also, his seemingly recoiling reaction to the idea that the WSL (and SIMA in an earlier episode of SPIT) would be better off if they put an emphasis on diversity.

I can't remember all the specifics, but get your point.
Hard to really know what he feels, but I sense that he's got a wicked sense of humour and indeed does play the devil's advocate, and is a contrarian by nature (something that is very much in my own nature, hence why I probably give him far more benefit haha).

As for the 'America >>' comment, I don't see that as a bad thing (within limits) and a bit of national pride is commendable. I'm saying that as a non-American btw.

Listened to Bassy's interview of Zanadu and that was pretty interesting.

Chris Mauro has a new podcast called people who surf. Peter King was awesome but not nearly long enough.

Matt always come across as cantankerous / ornery, but I quite like that about his persona. I remember the rant he was referring to ... some dude on Facebook had a good old whinge about MR surfboards / Lost colab. Did that rant come up on these forums too, or was that all FB drama?

Listened to the Josh Kerr episode on surf splendor, that dude has it made!

Has the stickered up surfboard started a slow death?

Can't wait to listen to Mayhem on the Grit...I've got some shrubs to trim this afternoon.

The Xanadu Podcast was very hard to listen to. Too Cocky and all over the place. The guy contradicts himself mid sentence.

I really enjoyed the Mike Lambresi interview that Bassy did.

Seems like a good dude. Salt of the earth type guy.

I probably liked him even more because I agreed with his opinion on just about everything.

Bassy: "Are you a spiritual person"

Mike: "Nope"

- long pause

Bassy: "Uhhhhhh"

Bassy needs to drop that schtick. I mean, who in real life asks ANYONE that question?!?! Such a cringey move.

Occy n his karate stick was lol. The story on the new one of Taj Burrow's farewell party on Tavarua with Mick 'Eugene' Fanning is epic too.

I agree. Not quite sure why he insists on asking everyone that question. Doesn't matter either way.

Let me just say I fuggin LOVED the Lambresi podcast.

He was straight up no BS.

Didn't bend to Bassy's cringey line of questioning and gave his honest opinion about all things.

On the flip side, really weird choice considering all the options out there, a lot of people will have no clue who he is...I only know him from reading 80s surf mags.

STILL WAITING FOR THE CHRIS WARD PODCAST but I doubt Bassy has the balls.

Also, the jazzy intro music is getting on my nerves. Knock that shit off already.

ouuu a wardo podcast...
I would love to hear from him, he made some bad decisions, I would hope he lives better because his backside barrel game is legendary (and stories)
speaking of fucked up people with backside tuberiding abilities, any word on Bruce Irons? I remember he bailed on that contest and then got some charges.

Rumour is that Slater has a full-size tattoo of himself over his entire body

Part two Surf Splendor Maurice cole is fantastic. Great discussion on sunny and mental health with ome great comments about the Bells contest and design. I like it except for the fact that they both said Kelly looked good on the simon anderson

Agreed.

Not sure what people saw in that Simon Anderson board.

It looked really tracky under his feet.

How crazy would it be if Kelly's struggles the past however many years were in a great part due to his insistence on riding EPS boards in all conditions...

How crazy would it be if Kelly's struggles the past however many years were in a great part due to his insistence on riding EPS boards in all conditions...

Don't forget you can get eps in similar density to PU. It definitely has a different memory (longer) and damping though. I like it for its longevity, but I as far as feel, I can switch back and forth no problem. I'm also doing dual blanks w pu rails. So much nicer to shape.

Agreed.

This isn't directed at Ghostshaper, but just a comment in general:

Let's not forget the dude has been nursing back and foot injuries the last couple of years.

Oh yeah, and he's 47 years old competing with 20 year olds at an elite level.

Small wave high performance surfing will be the first thing to fall off,. Sure he will have good small wave performances here and there, but not with the consistency of a Flippy, JJF, or Medina.

He's still the best when it comes to barrels though. jam_on

Better than JJF.

Yeah, I said it.

Jack Johnson OcCast was pretty good.

Couple updates:

Surf SPlendor:

Nathan Fletcher Michael Oblowitz. Annoying, couldn't finish it.

Chris Gally was pretty good talking about Jordy and coaching etc.

JS was cool hearing his story. Pretty depressing hearing that there aren't really too many up and coming shapers according to these guys.

Boardroom:

Just got done listening to Joe Roper. Enjoyed it but I'm a SD born and raised guy so....

It would be nice to never hear tea discussed in a surf podcast again.

Every shaper I've spoken to about this has told me the exact same thing, at least when it comes to performance boards.

Not many younger guys are interested in being shapers and many are too lazy to put in the hard work it takes to get good (not my words).

"The future is Firewire. If you want to ride good boards you guys are fucked"

Tons of new shapers, probably all doing keel fish and weird hull bottom chine rail boar bonzers.
Then again after that Asher PAcey clip last week, im glassing some marine ply to my ikea table

Rumour is that Slater has a full-size tattoo of himself over his entire body

Currently listening to the Stab MIC Podcast on Mick Fanning.

They go into some of Mick's business pursuits, contracts, and a bit of the surf industries financial motivations that you don't really hear about.

Always wondered about this side of the surf industry and it's pretty interesting.

The Bing Copeland episode of Surf Splendor was really good.

Cool to hear him talk about surf exploration in the 1950s.

So good. That could have been three times longer as far as I'm concerned.

Listened to the TK Brimer Froghouse episode, definitely chaos management success story. Fascinating that wetsuits are what keep him in business.

Thought it was funny he admitted going to Costco to buy Wavestorms to resell, smart move!
