Looking at a twin fish for my upcoming boat surf trip in maldives in April next year. Need a board for small days if I get unlucky with swell.

Share your experience ! (living in OZ so any local shaper welcomed)

Trad fish: DMS charger.
New school: Gary McNeill torus twin.
Both on Gold coast.

I cant speak highly enough about my Vouch Small Vish. Amazing little fish. You can cruise it or absolutely rip on the thing. Bullet proof constitution too. Pretty much all Ive ridden for over 12 months and it looks new.

Christenson. Works well in small waves but also has a good upper range. Quality construction.
Go as small as possible.

Mackie sidecut is sick too....

Just always go back to my stretch

I didn't get on well with the McNeill Torus Twin.

I love my DVS fish.

If I lived anywhere near Corey Graham (Melbourne?).... would love to sample one of his.

This doesn't fall into the fish category, but when I was in the Maldives, I saw a few guys absolutely ripping on MR super twins. It looked like it was a pretty versatile board in that it performed well on both the smaller and bigger days.

Haven't tried one myself, but I'd like to get one now.

I think my next board will be a cool fish.

Love my TKF but its in need of some refinements. I keep feeling up RTTs but cant get over the alt construction.

Who else makes a modern retro?

Since OP was looking for a small wave fish I left out the DVS carbon/eps twin keel rocket fish which was the mind machine in 3-6' barrelling waves.

AA's twins look so sick. Varial had a batch of more grovely twin fish from Akila Aipa that looked unreal too - it was posted on their IG and I almost bought one... still kind of wish i did.

I went and spoke with Dick Van about it. Have a 60. Basically just old him my weight and we talked about surfing and ideas etc. it is the more traditional outlined one with the wild bottom and deck. Will try to

While we're at it...OP are you going to be surfing the fish backside as well as frontside? If so I might suggest looking at quads as well. Generally speaking a quad fish will be easier to surf on your backhand. For travelling a board with fin boxes will be easier for travelling than with glassed on keels too.

Whoa so many options !

I m not sure about it @retropete, depends where the charter takes us ! but probably yes, I actually own the Christenson Fish but I can t travel with it it s glassed Keel ! It s the fastest board I ever had, I love it to death. The backside is not great indeed... but frontside it literally flies effortless.

I recently acquired a Gary Mcneil CV2, always thought about the RTT, some people say both boards have the same genes, but the CV2 light up when the wave have power and I had it in 5'11. So many people craving about the RTT thou as being their best twin fish.

The only thing i don't want is a twin that is too loose, that s why i love the Christenson it s not loose AT ALL, solid.

I discovered today some fun shapes from shapers like Baker Surfboard (http://www.bakersurfboards.com/bakery/funboard/spoon/) and Maren Surfboard (https://marensurfboards.com/pages/pontoon), they look so sick !

Cool. I have a 57 rocket fish that was supposedly built for Rastovich who is similar weight to me but taller. Im a bit intimidated by the board as it feels bigger than a fish I would normally ride. Not sure if Im overthinking it, but its kind of made me hesitant to use it.

Dick Van was kind of odd when I tried inquiring about the board. Full message didnt go through and he didnt want to discuss dimensions.

DVS is a strange character, on his boards only the lengths is written. I had a fish wasp from him, ordered a 5'10, gave him my weight. A boat came back ! 5 10 21 1/2 2 3/4, probably like 42-43L when I ride 32L shortboard ! I have to say the board was seriously flying but you couldn't turn that and the board was so heavy.

Grab a cheap foam roller from Walmart or Target, cut out slots for the fins and tape that sucker down tight to the board. Then pack as normal.

a slightly oversized yellowed old Zippifish is still the best twin fish I ever surfed. Lokbox Zippi keels.

I was going to say if you're anywhere near the Gold coast drop into the Boardroom at Miami and look at the stock DVS boards they have. Grabbing one off the rack that feels good to you can be better than ordering a custom from Dick as you've found out.

I like my Christenson fish a lot. Not a true groveler, but it still works great in the small stuff. Small, punchier surf it's great. I would think it'd be a phenomenal board for small Maldives

I had my best session, so far, on that board in barreling overhead North CA beach break. But then I take it out in small lined up surf and it still flies. Such a magic stick.

Bad experience with traveling with glass-ons? I regularly take my fish with glass-ons and never had an issue. Just pack accordingly, you should be fine.

Also, if you have a Christenson, that would be the only board I'd surf in the Maldives, but I'm a sucker for twinnies.

Maybe its just me but I never thought of twin keel fishes as boards for small, weak surf.

Mine have always worked best when its solid.

Solid, reeling point breaks.

I neglected to mention earlier, I'm extra, super stoked on the RTT, since it's better suited for most waves I'm surfing these days, but my Stretch Quadfish afforded me some of my most memorable rides at Sunset Cliffs while I lived there. The way my Quad Fish was sized, it was a bit big for me, but on bigger days, that board was absolutely amazing. The rails on my Quad Fish were WAY better suited for high-speed turns and carves, whereas the RTTs rails are much more squared-off, although both are 50-50.

On my RTT, I'm always riding different fins to get totally different rides (Akila Aipa twins FTW, Christiansen keels are good, etc etc.), whereas on the Quad Fish, Lost Seaworthy split keels were consistently the best setup IMHO.

My Quad Fish is on sale right now, btw...

I have a 5'0 Christenson that I was riding at Leo Carrillo last spring. Board is such a jam. More versatile than I thought, but a little fickle on where it wants your feet on the deck. Probably less fickle on one with more length.

McNeill RTT is my fave. Really high performance for a fish outline. It surfs well with uprights or keels.

Think Ive nearly tried them all....but my vote goes to.... Pavel fish running on lockbox CI turbo fins. Second place for smaller waves Dick Van Straalen eps hydro hull glassed on keels.

You mean, other than my own.....? trout

I have a 56 Pavel keel that is super fun. A 58 Mackie new style side cut thats a riot, and I wish i kept a KG twinzer made by Mabile.

I always liked the look of Tomo original twins, although I would hardly call them fish

Ive has em all and theyre like woman . Each has its own charm and ecstatic qualities . Currently like my Burch squits In lined up chest high plus with a pocket clean groomed groundswell .
I like my Burch Cuttlefish for peakier A frames and it also works well backside in fast tubes as it has a little more rocker and its lighter and longer and narrower . Stretch quadfish for daily driver awesomeness .

Go see muzza bourton in currumbin if youre on the goldy. He will spend the time messing with the boards on the computer, measuring in detail your old boards, and showing you boards hes recently made. 2 week turnaround and a nice discount if you pay cash

He can make it all including twins and fishes and is very experimental with fins & constructions. Plus he is easy to deal with and one of the nicest guys ever

Hes a legend and we always have a good yarn or a fun surf.

Dick Van is in his 80s. He shapes all sorts of craft. He isnt into specific dims. He isnt into closed minds. He told me something along the lines of if you see a board and tell yourself that you cant ride it, well you are right. Basically a closed mind leads to a closed experience. He does not give one rip about liters etc. if that line of thought and feeling suits you, his boards may suit you. If not.... if it is about the computer and liters well then you have lots of other options. His boards are for some. Not for others.

Any one have experience w/ the FCD fish? I had one I bought used a few years ago but ended up selling it after a few sessions b/c it had lok-box & the keels it came w/ were too small & I couldnt find a replacement set. From what I could tell, it was a good board & I liked the outline, rails, & rocker profile. But Im in the market for a new fish now & I think it would be a good option.
Any feedback on these?

I saw this one in store as well, looks like a high performance twin, good looking board ! I have a CV2 from gary mcneil, really nice board ! love it. I think the RTT has the same DNA, not sure it s worth buying both. Anyone owing both ?

Just picked up a McNeill RTT. Feels VERY HP for a fish. Stoked to open 'er up once the waves cooperate.

really happy with my stamps banjo.

fast - really fast and fairly loose underfoot. just this morning i had a nice backside arc through a steeper corner. sure, cannot match the performance of a short board but for a fish it is pretty versatile.

in fact, i think the only way to improve the board is to make it less like a fish if you know what i mean.
